Considering you attempted to educate someone on the subject, despite the fact that you don't understand it yourself, a correction was appropriate. I'd have done the same thing if someone had claimed the earth was flat; bad knowledge shouldn't be allowed to spread.

Rhetorical questions are questions posed in order to make a point. They are not just questions to which the speaker doesn't expect an answer, nor are they questions that can't be answered. 'What (in the fuck) was that?' has no point to make; it's a straight-forward query with no substance. It would not qualify as a rhetorical question in any educated definition of the term.
'Is this any of your business, Seikah, you annoying pedant?' would be a fine example of a rhetorical question. Attempted point: it is none of my business. Retort: don't care lol •̀⌄•́
