actually this series isn't an exception. it's just that its a manhua, which is aimed at kids. so far most of the xianxia's that have been adapted to manhua form have been toned down as well.

Not really, try reading novel adaption with artstyle like Feng, you will clearly see the differences, this kind of artstyle are usually aim at teens, calling "manhua aims at kids" is kind of like saying "Hentai are for kids"

right and wrong is merely a point of view. often decided by the victor. but that way to complicated to get into for something so shallow as xianxia.

as for people attacking you because they think your weak. if you're OP, then there's no problem. but what if your enemies are as strong as you are, and you have more than one? what happens if they 'smell blood in the water', and decide to gang up on you? i get that you're a very morally opinionated person, but morals only work in civilized places, morals tend to get you killed if you use them against tyrants and dictators. and that's not even xianxia, that's earth.

 

anyways, a number of xianxia's actually start out with MC's who value life and were brought up in civilization. IET's stellar transformations is one. but as they progress to places where power rules, they have to hold back their true life loving selves and become more ruthless and aggressive to keep their enemies at bay.

as the saying goes: "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." eventually you'll reach a point where the only thing that matters is power. when you're top dog, you can do as you please, being a benevolent god/ruler or a sadistic tyrant, but until then, it's best to make sure you survive long enough to reach that point.

 

while true many people are just sadist killers in xianxia, many MC's actually still value life but have adapted to the situation where they need to kill to survive. it's not about right or wrong, it's about protecting what you care about.

if you want a xianxia novel with an MC more your type, try Shen Yin Wang Zuo. (there's also a manhua for it, not as good as the novel, missing a lot of info and events here and there) the MC's a nice guy and even better is that he's not an idiot like the guy of this manhua. anyways, this story should fit well with what you like.

Reminds me of the quote "War does not determine who is right, only who is left." Moral and Righteousness and all the goodies means nothing in the madness that is war. What keeps you alive is knowing how to kill and not get killed.
However, war does not determine who is right. Survivors are simply survivors, winners of war. These winners make the new rules, and the rules become the norm. What are the chances of these "Winners" establishing standards that portrays their acts as pillars of justice, and not as killers of many?

And there's been a misunderstanding. I said it way before that killing when youre not desperate is a wrong decision. I never mentioned that you must not kill. Only if mc is desperate enough to see killing as the only possible solution.
Even then killing is wrong.
What i expect of such mc is not "I had to kill to survive." but "I survived, but killed someone.". There's a difference.
Former is justifying his act of killing, focusing on the good outcome that is his survival. Latter is accepting the fact that he killed someone, a son of a mother, for any reason, and live with that sin on his shoulders.

I also highly recommend Shen Yin Wang Zuo (Also known as Divine Throne) and the same authors Douluo Dalu (Soul Land)

With that said, for all that is holy don't read the comics. (Says the person on the comic website right> lol)

They really do not compare to the novels. By far.

also, steadfast is not the same as stupidity. sometimes being stupidly stubborn can be seen as steadfast but there is a massive difference between 'stupidly stubborn' and just plain stupid.

most MC's are steadfast, specially shounen ones. but many are also majorly stupid. i don't know how being stupid became the norm for MC's but that really needs to change. you can have a good shounen manga without a stupid MC. but i suppose having a stupid MC makes it easy to create cheap pathetic humor, and thats why everyone uses a dumb MC.

I'll put it this way. If i were to be born into this dog eat dog world where people im close to kill and get killed for pride and revenge, id most definitely learn from them and act in the same way. But that does NOT make it right! That's simply how i was influenced and what i become.

Real life scenario, a boy raised in a male dominant family that happen to have superiority complex towards females WILL become a sexist himself. That does not mean being sexist is the right thing.

 

Why is it not "right"? because mc is a human character. because humans are capable of more than just having a face to save or having superiority complex.

I wouldn't be so stuck up about this argument if it was literally a world of dogs killing each other to eat. though i wouldn't be reading it in the first place..

Humans. Are. Not. Dogs.

The moment the character is portrayed as a human being i as a reader am linking good and bad qualities that a real life human can have to said character. Qualities that stands out depend largely on the universe, story, etc, but they can not be invalid exactly because it is a human character based on human beings. It's what makes em believable as a human character.

 

The me in dog-eat-dog world would act like its normal, and its understandable, but doesn't make it right. It makes me a dangerous human being that disregards life for some status i think are more important.

The sexist me talking down on girls because its a given doesnt make it right, it makes me a narrowminded asshole.

Why the bad impressions even though im not doing anything wrong, im simply acting the way ive learnt?

Because i am portrayed as a human character and i am showing bad qualities of a human being. Me not knowing any better does not make it right.

 

If i was a dog and i go around biting other dogs, or forcing b***hes to carry my babies noone would say im wrong cos im.. not wrong. I'm a dog in a dog eat dog world and im not raised to think any better, i have no standard and no obligation to care about any other dogs life over mine. I'll probably never come to think about it even, after all all i need is food, b***hes and an alley of my liking.

Crazy dog, probably. alpha dog? maybe. bad dog? nah, i'm just an animal doing animal things.

 

On a side note, IF mc happens to be one of those that kill for whatever reasoning that makes sense in xianxia universe it doesnt make him an unbelievable character for me, it only makes him a character i don't like.

 

Also i dont see the problem with people attacking you because they "think" you're weak for letting someone live. If anything you're strong enough to win with ease that you really didnt need to kill, if the guys cant see that its them being dumb. Plus what are the chances of them winning against you, when they think you became weaker but in fact you didn't.

Aren't i lucky for being born in reality where killing people for some shallow reasoning is no longer accepted as norm~

So lucky for being a living person surrounded by people of similar moral standard than being a manga character within fictional universe where death of someone barely means anything.
So lucky for people around me since they have to worry less about someone coming for their life for pissing him off.

 

I like the idea of punching someone's light out instead of killing way better. Guess that explains why this series is an exception to me compared to what a traditional xianxia would be.

also while true that many of the reasons people kill for in xianxia are shallow, many times it's understandable. you have to realize that they live in a world where the strong rules and the weak are trampled upon. many times people in this genre kill to save 'face' (aka reputation). this seems shallow to us, but in these dog-eat-dog worlds, face is very important. it might seem like b*tch slapping someone into a crater in the floor is enough punishment for an offense, but letting them live could be seen as a sign of weakness to your enemies. which would then attack you because they think you've become weak.

you can't think in terms of how our world works. you need to think how the story's world works; what it means to let an enemy live, what it means if your reputation is questioned, what happens when you look weak.

 

and one more thing. in xianxia people live for extreme amounts of time. what is there to value more than face? in a place where a mishap can haunt you for centuries/millinia/millions of years, it's understandable if people want to make sure that no one has the ballz or ability to speak of it.

You so would be the first one to die haha. Anyhow, although this has a lot of Xianxia elements it does not meant that it takes everything from the universe, we might not have all the elements from it.

It's mostly my personal moral standard finding the culture of xianxia "questionable" rather than what my culture has taught me clashing with the culture depicted within xianxia universe. Unless you meant Cultural Crash the book which i.. have only heard the name of.

So Xianxia universe is like that, and MC chose to not follow the norm, or "culture". I don't see how not following a logic based on culture or norm is the same as making a bad decision. At best it sounds like "You don't share the same conduct as us in our house? You're wrong then.", which is pretty debatable in itself.

To recap, my only gripe is seeing the idea of letting enemies live being rejected as a bad choice even if it is in xianxia universe, especially in this case after considering how much of a threat [or nuisance] they pose to mc.

Yes they are. A popular joke in from Xianxia readers is "You can't write Immortal without Immoral". Really most MCs are not fond of killing but comes a point when they realize that if you let that guy go he's going to have a big brother and then a father then an elder and so on... If you make him mad(look at him the wrong way) and defeat him, the best you can do is to silently kill him and destroy his corpse as to avoid any further problems.

As you can guess, a lot of MCs do this because... They won't be more powerful nor be able to escape an older practioner, the gap is too huge. At least until they get super OP later in the story.

And yes these petty elders when asked by their Juniors have nothing else better to do than chase some teen guy in the forest and execute him. Just because his son/nephew/prized student got bitchslapped(yes it happens).

In fact, the MC is often portayed as an arbiter of justife because all these immortals are above the law. Past a certain rank they shed their mortal bodies and are immortal. It's not uncommon to find an old man living for thousand or million of years and have million of kills and thousand of thousands of rapes to his name. He lives because he is strong and/or his Clan is strong. Then comes the MC who does not care about the status quo and kills him.

Due Process would be cool, but there is no law system. Everyone else is too scared because if they did this, the Clan would retaliate. But the MC is fearless and does what is right even if it means death will soon come because he dared to act when others did not.

Getting stuck up on revenge and prides over lives is what i see as immature. As in, not mature enough to be able to swallow the pride, to forgive and forget, or to know that someone's life is more than simply just a nuisance even if its someone that you have no feeling towards, amongst other "immature" things.

If a character lacks those quality that defines a mature person then he is immature, not as an insult but in the form of a description.

Manchild part is an insult though. "Yer an adult, grow up and act like a good one!"

I guess this is where the cultural crash is. anyway, just know that killing in xianxia is not out of the ordinary.
