The hero was never heard from again because after the last battle, not only the demon lord dies but the hero as well from exhausting his powers. The previous demon lord and hero were both male (cough cough) so there couldn't be a romance between them (or could there?!).

 

The background of the world was explained in chapter 26

When the world was created there were no living beings, in order to give birth to life God filled the world with mana. After a while, demons were born from the mana, they were the dominate and most intelligent life forms on the planet, though there were natural beings (animals) not born from mana as well. Over time, those beings gained awareness as well (basically evolving), but the demons had grew strong from absorbing mana, and were oppressing them.

 

God wanted to protect the natural beings, but at that point mana was so entwined with the world that it could not be removed (more like its a pain in the butt to). And so God decided to concentrate all the mana in the world at one point (the demon lord) and created a power to destroy it (the hero). When the demon lord is destroyed, the demons are weakened due to the lack of mana in the atomsphere and those that still live would go into hiding. However the mana would not be completely gone, the demon lords are recreated (not simply revived as it will be a different one every time) once every 100 years through the collection of mana, and the heroes will appear along with them. It is said that the first hero was the strongest and got weaker over time, while the first demon lord was the weakest and got stronger over time (which is why Mao is the strongest yet).

 

Demon lords typically retain the memory of the moment of their previous death so they bare a grudge toward the hero/mankind. There were hints that the demon lord before Mao might have planned something in order to break the cycle, so you could speculate that this might be linked to Mao's circumstances.

 

The reason why the hero is so weak right now

Because the hero is basically God himself, his power is based on the faith of his believers. It had been 300 years since the last demon lord instead of the regular 100 years, there are far fewer people that believe the demon lord's and the hero's existence than before. People have long abandoned the churches and the fairies that help support the hero had long gone into seclusion.

tbh, I don't find those spoilers to be spoilers per se... After all, the story over here isn't so deep, that it needs 200 page flowcharts, just to make sense of it.

I hope for a romantic ending between those two...

I'm now wondering if the hero and demon lord conflict had actually been an unwitting quest by some dude to eventually fall in love with and then marry the demon lord, thereby bringing peace to the realm. That is until the human factor naturally died first and she wiped her memory and waited for him to reincarnate, beginning the cycle anew.
