weed got a shitload of money at the start from selling his old gaming account which was a legend in said game. he then decided to make more money in a similar fashion in a new game, selling gear and the like.

I don't think your physique effects the game, it's just your skill can apply in game. So if you know how to fight with a sword, you don't really need sword skills. Your stats completely determine how strong or fast your body is. He trains his body beforehand so he will be able to play alot and still be in good health, and possess martial arts and fighting skills he can apply to the game.

being at the peak of physical health also helps with what he wants to do since he is going to spend most of his time online, otherwise his health would deteriorate quickly and that means hospital bills and being forbidden from the capsule by a well-meaning doctor, at this point he only needs to maintain the body, which is less time-consuming than getting strong

Yes, your actual physique will affect this VRMMO for some reason but that doesn't beat

The matter is that Royal Road is a VRMMO. So being good at fighting in real world makes him good at fighting inside the game. And after learning that, he decides to make preparations for a year learning martial arts.

Not disputing your knowledge of the original material but... I know a lot of poor people with smartphones. Seriously my job is to help unemployed and homeless people find work and you'd be surprised how many of them spend what little money they have on good phones.

I wouldn't say that it's a bad adaptation yet, in fact, it seems they're staying pretty true to the novels so far. As for his appearance, which is entirely subjective for each individual reader, please keep in mind that Weed is not a beggar. In the flashback scenes we see the "kid"-Weed look rather rough and thread-bare, but since then he's worked for a living and got money - not much compared to most people, but he's able to do more with it than most
