Aw man they didn't really explain the hair besides them thinking it's stress related.
But it would be cool if that is the case(Cool as in plot). It clearly didn't rip out of his head, since he didn't cringe like most of us would, and you can't easily pull a chunk that big out either.

From my point of view it makes sense. Super-nice kid (almost to a fault) who is hiding a bald patch and who is obviously so self-conscious about it that he hides it with hair clips. He is obviously too young to be having MPB, and the woman has already confessed, so some sort of obstacle has to be introduced, since IMO the age gap isn't enough.
Then again I could be reading waaaaay too much into it, since he still has those hair pieces even during the flashback. We shall see I guess.
