Lemme guess, you only believe what the media tells you about cops. They take these horrible incidents and overblow them for ratings. You have to be delusional to believe that in this day in age that it's not a good idea to call the cops if you are ANY race. These supposed systematic issues you whine about ARE NOTHING compared to some countries.

It's not an issue of individual good men, good women, good men and women who aren't white and so forth.  Certainly there are quite a number of those.  Of course, there are also quite a few bad men and women who joined because they want to swagger and push people around, but that isn't the real issue either.  The issue is structural.

Police tend to be worse in places with high inequality, police tend to be worse in places which are militaristic.  US police are increasingly given military equipment, encouraged to take up a military (and specifically, counterinsurgency) mindset, trained by military personnel and so on.  There are now cases of police being trained by the Israeli military, which spends most of its time administering rule over the suppressed Palestinian population.  Even aside from the specifically military issues, the police in various ways cultivate an "us vs them" mentality; this is very obvious in organizations like the Fraternal Order of Police.

Police are also embedded in the broader justice system, which in the US is both very punitive and very corrupt (consider that in the US, the conviction rate is 97%, largely because most accused will agree to a plea bargain rather than fight cases in court; they do that because the prosecution have access to paid jailhouse "snitches" who will tell any story they want on the witness stand; between this and various other imbalances, prosecutors are able to convince arrestees that they would have no chance in court, thus securing quick and easy convictions without time consuming trials so they can pad their resumes.  Consider that the co-operation of the police is probably necessary to effectively run scams such as the "snitches" one).  The modern US justice system was also designed partly on purpose to be racist; on Nixon's tapes he talks about the war on drugs being for the purpose of getting the blacks without looking like they're getting the blacks; the explosion in incarceration rates after the sixties was in part a direct response to the civil liberties movement.  The police are in part a tool for that purpose; individual police officers aren't told that, but they are told that preferentially stopping blacks makes sense because blacks are more likely to be criminals.  The system is designed to criminalize blacks, to make not just police but the general public assume black criminality.  It also largely enforces impunity for bad police actions; abuse thrives on impunity.

 

Overall, there is a whole constellation of forces pushing individual US police officers towards both abusive behaviour and, on the flip side of the coin, paranoid fear.  Some of these forces exist to some extent in other countries, but not all and not as strongly (unless you start talking about some pretty skeezy countries).  There may be some really good people in the force, but the question isn't the good apples who will resist doing bad things no matter what institution they're part of, nor the bad who would try to be bad wherever they were.  Most people aren't all that bad but also not all that good; most people tend to go with the flow, take on the mores of the situation they're in.  US police forces as institutions, their cultural and institutional matrix, push this mass of average people in the force towards doing bad things more than good.  They do not for the most part inculcate an ethos of service and protection, but rather of seeing the entire population (particularly but certainly not only the coloured bits of it) as dangerous, probably criminal, more or less the enemy.  This is not a static situation, but seems to be intensifying.

As a side note, the individualist approach to social issues once again makes no sense.

It's how we're primed to think about things, but it's ludicrous to imagine that if someone has a problem with the police in a country it's because the police are made up of a bunch of individual bad people.

So if police shoot 100 times as many people (per unit population) in the US as in Britian, that leaves us claiming that the individual guys who joined the police are 100 times as violent in the US as in Britain.  Or if unemployment is caused by individual laziness, we have to say that recessions are caused by everyone suddenly getting lazier than they were a month ago. Any time people start talking about social issues as products of individual traits, if you look at how things have to be working for that to be true it becomes obviously ridiculous.

I really didn't understand why, but reading this series often hit too close to home. And as weird as it sounds, every time Tsutsui and Iroha kissed, I felt a jolt, as if I were struck by lightning. I think this has become my all-time favorite shoujo series.

Oh give me a break. You have to be delusional to believe that the US police force is somehow worse then many countries with actual corruption. There are alot of good men and women (women, minorities as well) who have taken the leap to be police.

It amazes me that any member of the 99% (especially the vulnerable* - women, minorities [especially Natives], poor, mental problems, etc) thinks it's a good idea to call US police for less than certain mortal peril. As with war and divorce... you can NOT win. There are only degrees of losing, and I hate seeing people find out the hard way that they're not an exception. ( ; _ ; )

 

Keep in mind that for every slam-dunk couldn't-be-more-obvious case of police abuse, there are at least 20-100 cases no one but the victim's family//friends will ever know about (because there was even a tiny room for doubt, so it got covered up).

 

* - I.e. those who are prone to not being believed. I have little doubt that half a dozen Native women could stand up and describe the exact same rape M.O. by a police officer, complete with DNA proof, and he would still walk. In fact, I have little doubt that has happened more than once in the last decade.

Never call the cops.  Well, it might be OK in Japan.  It might even sometimes be worth the risk here in Canada.  In the US, never call the cops.

They will not make things better, they will make them worse.  Sure, they probably won't actually shoot you--even though that happens a lot if you count country-wide, as a percentage it's still very small.  But they'll probably conclude you did SOMETHING wrong.  They may handcuff you, arrest you, otherwise humiliate you, beat you up, steal your stuff either as "evidence" or "proceeds of crime", break things (doors, furniture, whatever) . . . the possibilities are endless.  Even if they're marginally helpful, they will take up a bunch of your time giving statements, want you to go to the police station to tell them more stuff.  You will then never hear from them again, at least in the context of whatever you called them about.  But you will be in their database, and so more likely to be hassled semi-at-random in future and, if you are hassled, treated worse because you came up in the database.

All this of course becomes seriously magnified if you happen not to be white.  If you're not white, never, ever call the police.  Maybe over a murder.  Maybe.
