It was an overall great manga, but with a very wacky ending. No, I'm not referring to the gender related matters, but to other parts such as:

It kinda took away from the rest. I think it would have been a little better if the epilogue had been done 10 chapters before. But I'm glad I read it nonetheless.

this manga is available in my country, under the title 'The Phantom Tower' (volume 3 now). great masterpiece !! Now I want to read the novel too.

This was a weird and wonderful masterwork. That said, I'm glad I waited until it was done to start reading because HOLY SHIT THE CHAPTER AND VOLUME CLIFFHANGERS IN THIS SERIES DID NOT F&%K AROUND.

 

If you happen upon this and you haven't read it, make some time to do so. It is highly worth it.

Lmao what. Well, atleast Amano ended up with Tetsuo I guess. Can't say I'm all to pleased with this conclusion though.

 

Didn't think the series would go from a mystery series into one that talks about gender relations.

 

It was definitely a bit much towards the end there but whatever I suppose. A decent read all together.

This is a masterpiece; a work on gender that is so rarely seen. I think the ending is a wonderful resolution to the central conflict of our two protagonists. Most works on issues of gender identity and sexual identification fall heavily in favour of those who desire to be something other than what society beleives them to be.

That romance, gender and love are concepts that are held incredibly rigidly in most humans and that perhaps this is the greatest restriction those with gender identity conflicts suffer from. The dream we hear called for so often is one where a person can be identified as whatever gender they so choose without stigma, an admirable one for sure. But surely a dream for a world where one can stop attempting to manipulate their own feelings to suit a schema of what any gender should be and simply be in harmony with their feelings is the better one altogether.
 
Is that not what this ending is?

Ah that kiss! I could have wanted more of the TetsuoxAmano love story but I think I'm mostly happy with the way this wrapped up and I absolutely loved the concept of changing the world slowly through one mystery novel at a time angle.

I was following the raws pretty closely so it didn't seem rushed for me. Anyway! I am satisfied with the ending. I really like how most of the plot lines were resolved (no loose ends) and the part when Taichi said about how the characters lose their charm when everything just ends *too* perfectly for everyone... But all in all our lovely characters mostly got the best endings so i can't complain. Unexpected developments... hilarious moments and batshit insane scenes where you wouldn't expect to come. It was a fun ride that I wouldn't mind reading the whole thing again. Sure it was wacky and crazy, but that's this story's charm right? Not only the story, but the characters sticked true to themselves and there were some nice characters development in addition to most of the mysteries being resolved (except for Tesla...). 11/10 would read again for the feeling of completion and I look forward to this author's next work!

And so it ends, though it should have ended after the ghost tower was resolved, the whole brain swap arc was completely superfluous. And really? Satako didn't end up with Amano? I felt like they had a descent connection. Plus if amano and tetsu are really a thing, then will they just never have typical coitus? The only way it would work sexually is if testu was the man on amano, but amano has always identified as straight.  

 

All in all, though it is an asspull, I am glad that yamashina survived, but if the author was gonna do that I wish he would have done it for that girl amano liked that got killed early on, she didn't deserve that.

I am going to rape you part was hilarious. But ending was so so. I don't see how Taichi has a gender identity issue. That was an unexpected and senseless revelation in the end.

edit: that was one hell of a whacky volume, from the chekhov's police officer ex machina to still, it's nothing less than i've come to expect from this series, even if it's nothing like how i imagined it'd end at the start; for as much of a period piece as it is, this is still a fantasy. so long, ghost tower. it was one hell of an insane ride.

Gender Identification and Sexual Orientation are different things.

The ending felt slightly rushed. Not massively so, but like one or two panels were missing. That aside, so many heart strings were tugged. Many heart strings were tugged, alot of what the fuck moments were had, just.. It was an amazing journey with a decent end~

thanks for the scanlations. I admit, this is one of the mangas that I completely changed my thoughts from Ch 1 to the finale. Here's to hoping the manga-ka does a new series soon. 

Hahaha, even I don't know how to take the last volume, there were parts that made me burst out laughing (Marube the potential rapist chasing Amano scene), so I guess I'll have to reread it some time in the future.
