Yeah, I'm not surprised that the actual movie
Well, why would you need VR when you already have an improbably incredible holographic technology? Actually, why would you need VR for a CCG in the first place, that's a rather dumb idea. People don't play CCGs for that kind of thing, but okay...
But the single dumbest thing is to let "brainwave signals" and "psychic signals" affect the game..., so now the strategy is even more dumbed down in favor of simple "psychic" brute force?
Well kids probably will like it I guess...

So Takahashi Kazuki had an "enlightment" after seeing the recent manga/novels and technologies, and made this new sequel.
He's basically making the canon version of the filler arc in the anime.
