Nice, panel 2, a classic tezuka drawing, hahah.

It's a refreshing take to the original work of Tezuka, and I'm glad I decided to read the manga after watching the anime. The video adaptation felt somewhat rushed.

While I agree with the others how delving into BJ's past lessens whatever 'mystery' that surrounds the talented doctor, his motives would actually make sense once we get to know the driving force behind his work, even when it's pretty established in the original. His history paved a great way for expanding the story, and as long as it's good, there won't be any complaints coming from me.

Also, i like how Young BJ's artstyle still gives that 'Tezuka feel'. It's good that the author decided not to deviate too much.

I know nothing of black jack or tezuka osamu's work besides the fact that he's the godfather of the medium and that he made astro boy and it was on cartoon network sometimes and when it came on I switched to something else. So strictly arguing from a non nostalgic, no prior association point all I can describe is a pretty decent manga about a pretty cool looking doctor dealing with both the times and an unsual circumstance. I can understand that this character and all of tezuka's work means stuff to people so i'm just speaking as a person out of the loop and as that person i think it's pretty interesting. Who knows maybe one day I'll get into his works, but I'm the kind of person who can't watch old gundam but read the written novels because the stories were good.

You should really try the original (non-young) Black Jack anime, it holds up superbly compared to the original manga. I was actually optimistically hoping that young black jack might give this work enough attention to maybe give the original anime a continuation of sorts; but it seems you can't even find an hd version of the original these days, let alone enough interest for new content.

From the top of my head, the anime covers (or more like completely zips through) the following volumes:

  • Episode 1-3 -->volume 1
  • Episode 4-6-->first half of volume 2
  • Episode 7-8-->most of volume 3
  • Episode 9-11-->Volume 7 and most of volume 8
  • Episode 12--> Second half of volume 2

Volumes 4, 5, and 6 are completely skipped over, which is a pity because those contained my favorite arcs :(. Not to mention the anime butchered Hyakki's arc and crammed the 2nd half of volume 2 into one episode.

Oh wow, they randomly jumped all over manga =\

I guess in those arcs that wasn't in anime, other noticeable characters from original BJ will appear? Again, thanks for tranlsation! It's a shame, that such a great franchize doesn't get much translations. If you intrested, I got scans of other spin-off of BJ - "Black Jack Neo".

And last thing due to omake - Black Jack now is 86 y.o. :o

Thanks for another quick update!

Thanks for Omaeke, it's always intresting to know such details.

From looking on the pace, I guess anime only took volumes from 1 to 3 at best?

Wow, I thought this was dropped. Thanks for another chapter!

I, on the contrary, can't seem to like this. I mean, one of the best part about Black Jack is his mysterious background and not everything is explicit. By digging into the past, they ruined one of the most memorable and deepest scene that was carved into my mind when i was a kid.

Not to mention even with only a brief appearance, the original still somehow make me "scream" of how awesome he is xD

I can't tell how serious you are. If you reread Black Jack now... it's not like it spells out every chapter of his childhood, but you get some backstory as early as chapter 5 and more backstory as early as https://www.otakusmash.com/read-manga/Black_Jack/001/251/

And don't forget this legendary backstory chapter that finally explains the original accident: https://www.otakusmash.com/read-manga/Black_Jack/007/108/

Thank you for translation Pug Jack!

I misread the title as Young Jack Black every time I see it. Every. Single. Time. =.=

But you have to appreciate how chapter 1 was given the same title :)

Anime version on other hand - butchered this manga.

All anime adaptions tend to butcher the original material, whether that be a manga, light novel, or video game. Is it really that hard to stay faithful to the original work? =.=

Thanks for update!

Well, 1st chapter somewhat gives similar vibe, at least as much as it possible to come close to Tezuka's original work, I think.

I can't hate this series because it attempts to recreate the experience of reading a Tezuka manga but for modern audience, it tries to mix modern gekiga with Tezuka's gekiga.

Yes, aside from the Star System cameos everywhere, this is a big reason why I like Young Black Jack! I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's got a bit of the same "feel" that Tezuka's own manga did.

Also, I thought it was interesting that this manga says an undetonated bomb (buried over time) was what injured Kuro'o. It's been a while since I read Black Jack, but I think the 2005 anime claimed it was a land mine, or something. Kind of different.

Thank you for your work, Pug Jack!

Well, yes, i've never said original was light series, but in Black Jack (in short BJ XD) those villains and situations didn't feel so forced. I'm talking about quality of characters and writing.

I do consider Tezuka as one of the best story writers out there, so maybe that's an unfair comparison? I mean Tezuka could establish characters nicely even if they appear only once in his episodic stories, which is something not everyone can do as seamlessly as him.

The original story had its fair share of darkness too.  Sure, it was easier to write it off with Tezuka's cartoonish art style and rampant side-gags, but there was some straight up evil shit going on.  Black Jack himself once deserted a guy on a small island liberally peppered with landmines with the strong implication that the dude didn't survive.  Sure, one might argue that the guy deserved it, but it doesn't change the fact that some seriously dark shit went down in the original stories.  I mean, Black Jack is no MW, but it was one of Tezuka's darker series, and probably almost definitely his darkest long-running series.

Somehow i hate this series. It's like they didn't bother to read original story and just inserted random evil and corrupted people.

YESSSS!!! THANK YOU FOR TRANSLATE THIS!!! *-*... I really like the original story, and I know that 'Young Black Jack' is for a new public, a new vision of BJ, some people don't like it, but I think is a really nice story, I'm really curious about =3

I consider this more of a spin-off rather than a prequel. As a spin-off it offers a nice story and good art, but when compared with the original of course many would be dissatisfied. That being said, I enjoyed the anime of this particular series so if the translator continues working on it, I'll keep reading it.
