from my point of view, the anime is giving us more mystery about the MC with his consistent expression, in the LN itself We know his thought like the manga (maybe??). but if i try to put how his reaction and expression he show from the LN the anime is more closer than the manga.

if you curious about the LN some site translated the LN to chapter 2 volume 2 (english) and don/t worry it quite different than the anime. 

i don't know about the manga, maybe everyone said the manga more faithful to the LN because in some scene the anime different than the LN, like when the MC know another side of kush... (cought) or something. but like i said the way MC looks from anime is more closer to the LN.

actually i was like this manga when it come out (likes the art style and the premises) but after i watch and read the LN, i feel like hmm....  

 

it is only chapter 4 so maybe i wrong about the MC expression. after all from the illustration of LN to vol 6 i feel his expression always strange in the manga

 

the way that make this series more unique is by his bored expression haha

But if you constantly give 0 fucks with a blank expression, that certainly going to attract attention over the time, and screams a possible hidden agenda.

If I'm allowed an educated guess I would go with Ayanokouji expression(s)...

The anime is pretty consistent in giving him the same bored face and the same monotone tone during all his interactions and monologues... odd enough its pretty charming and compelling, making him pretty unique for a MC... since he is compared to Hikigaya and Kyon and all... sans his human desires...

 

In the manga he has shown a complete set of all kinds of smiles and blushing like any normal MC (he has human desires and even dishes tsukkomi!)... although maybe I failed to see if it's the kind of thing he only has in his internal monologues... all the other characters still treat him the same and all... so maybe it's something like this...

 

Well, since I didn´t read the LNovel, and just presume the manga adaptation came first, I wonder if this is because the artist didn´t have enough references to work with Ayanokouji persona... or if his solid expression was some creative freedom from the anime staff... If something I like the anime version better too... make a lot of his exchanges way funnier...
