So, the lesson of chapter one was, apparently, "shut your festering gob, you whiner, empathy and kindness are signs of weakness and you deserve public mockery for being awkward, now get back to work and stop expecting other people to do anything other than stab you in the back and spit in your face".

And this was liked well enough to have an anime made from it? Christ.

This was 1968, not a happy time in Japan.

It also gets better later, though it's still pretty formula. But at least the formula becomes 'Moguro is a dick, but his clients fail through their own weakness' instead of 'he's just a freaking a-hole' like here.

Watch an ep of 'New Laughing Salesman'. It might still not be your thing, but it's way more nuanced and funny than this. And the OP song is amazingly good.

The manga doesn't teaches a lesson like the 80s anime. It is more of a Dark Comedy.Dark Comedy tends to be disturbing. Well no wonder the 80s anime used to air on saturdays :v.
