This title is still hilarious

Honestly, I'd rather see a tragic ending than what we got. Could've ended two pages earlier than it did.

Still a very enjoying read overall.

I 'a nice ending to a tragic but did not see much.

Virgin Ripper just sounds like an amazing title... Especially when it involves scythes.

Yeah... I have a very sick and twisted mind and kinda hoped for sth along the lines of a monster ripping the virgins to shreds..

I'm not gonna be happy if the entire plot of this manga is really just Ryouma trying to get Kotori back, given all we know about her she'll dump him for his selfishness.

Story Sin 1.  Suicide is a sin singularly worthy of hell? Suicide being a sin comes from a stupid concept of christianity.  Yet no sign of christianity anywhere. So already pretty lame. Just use some other concept for assignment of reapers, like random people who died with a grudge or something.

 

Sin 2.  Plus if everything is fated, then that means people were born fated to commit suicide, so how can you punish someone for something they were forced to do by some fate crystal.  So second fail in premise.

 

Sin 3. Finally saying fate is one thing, but saying the souls get destroyed because they died at a time outside fates decided time is really stupid.  So someone could commit murder and their souls would only go to hell, but if they die a day latter then fate decided, they disappear altogether? Give me a break.

Sin 1: Fair enough. I do want to point out that nobody wins with suicide. The living will grieve, or at least not celebrate, unless they really enjoy someone being so mentally tortured that he/she chooses death over life. The dead doesn't win because there's no good or bad in death.

Most "beliefs" assume that life after death, if there is one is one without significant memories or connections to the previous life. According to those, suicide would hardly make that life better. I assume a lot of those beliefs assume there is even a punishment, (like christianity) probably because suicides are "inconvenient" for the living, including fellow believers.

Sin 2: That's a logical fallacy. The way you're interpreting fate here is synonymous with determinism. These future shinigami are fated/determined to commit suicide, but the punishment is just as fated/determined. If you're going this route, there is no right or wrong, because everything is determined to happen the way it is happening. I guess you could complain that humans/living beings are not created equal*, but that's old news.

* using your (or my) moral views. Of course, you and me would be fated/determined to believe that people are not born equal as well. Strictly speaking, moral standard, (which includes concepts like equality, are simply not applicable. Since no two humans can be the same, have the same qualities, properties, skills, personalities... etc. at the same time. Being "equal" is not about being literally the same and the parts that are "allowed" to differ are defined by moral codes.

Sin 3: I think we can agree on that one. I'm not satisfied with that explanation either. Being able to "defy fate" also means that the world is not completely determined, (see Sin 2) which I'm okay with. There supposedly has to be one "fated time of death"/"fated course of action" and if fate is "defied", aka people die at the "wrong" time, they cease to exist. Idk why I wanted to spell it out, but I guess that's really it. You can't have your cake and eat it. I think the author is still trying at this moment, though.

TL:DR: I'm being nitpicky, but share your opinion that the plot has developed for the worse in recent chapters.

Guess the author gave up or something. The plot convenience was strong and rushed in this chapter. O_o

Okay, so if she rides her scythe like a witch's broomstick, how does it work for shinigami with smaller scythes

From what I remember she's the only one with a spoon for a scythe. I remember it being mentioned that she didn't want to be violent with the souls of a dead person unlike all the other shinigami who use actual scythes. Otherwise Nagi's weapon is his claws because he's a cat. Those two are the only ones with different scythes.

"People who commit suicide become shinigami who have cute outfits and lead the souls of the dead" is not really a part of of Japanese Folklore. Even if you take out the cute outfits part.

 

I'm not sure what the style has to do with it when Tanemura Arina has likewise had a characteristic style for over ten years. Which I might add is almost the amount of time between the start of publication for Full Moon and for this manga. Guess which came first?

 

Also main character's initial shinigami design is still a ridiculous match for the design of one of the shinigami in the main cast of Full Moon.

Apparently Black Butler also uses the whole idea of people who commit suicide become shinigami. So it's obviously not a new idea and who knows if Arina started the whole idea or not. One can't tell since there's soooo many different ideas and such in Japan that one just can't based off of who created what first when it's all in Japanese. It's pretty hard to come up with new ideas. =) And hell people can come up with similar ideas without knowing about the others idea. An example is that some people believe the author of the Hunger Games ripped the idea from Battle Royale.

Style is because when you mentioned character designs. =P It's shoujo and both authors debuted about the same time in the 90's. Maguro a year before Arina as far as I can tell from MU and the listed publication dates. Also I don't know which shinigami's you feel are so similar and even if they are there's no way it can be flagrant plagiarism. Maybe coincidental. Full Moons shinigami have animal themes from what I remember. Other than those few things both stories are so different. =)

Don't know if I want to continue this or not... I'm only on chapter 9 so far but seriously the main girl is incredibly frustrating.

The girl still wants to throw herself into the villain's arms even if he wants to destroy the world. I know this manga is hinting that there are spots in her memory that have been sealed off (which could probably show her past with Commander Ryouma) but there is nothing there to endear me to the Hikari/Ryouma ship. Absolutely nothing. And as the manga goes on further to demonstrate her obessesion for him (even to the point of her dreaming up of that illusion of Ryouma saving her when in reality she was saved by Nagi, and worse... taking comfort in that illusion) it just makes me more angry at her character.

Then, of course, there's Ryouma shattering her soul all over the place only for Counselor Ikki to pick them all up so that she can heal up. She'll forgive him for trying to get her hurt, tortured, and killed either through him or through his subordinates. She's like a freaking doormat and gets saved in this manga by someone else more often than saving herself.

I should probably just take a break from this manga and come back to read it later. I want to see if she grows out of this ridiculous infatuation because everyone at this point is telling her straight up how delusional she's being.

After reading chapter 10 and 11, I can finally understand her obsession with Ryouma. Will probably continue this now after that.

Well since you took a change of heart and likely read the rest of the chapters, I think you may have seen the intrigue, however little it may be for some. Sure it may not be a great story, because let's face it, most developments rely entirely on Hikari's 'pureness' as it were(like quite a few of the lesser Shoujo/josei in Japan), but it has an interesting concept and is engaging. The pacing suffers because of the character focus, but it's good enough, frustrating as things may get.

Well, I'm not thinking of reading but ... so the name should actually be Virgin Reaper? I only clicked the link cuz I wondered just what was going on with the ripping in this manga. I imagined a psycho going around ripping apart virgin girls.
