Just here to browse the comments section of this manga one last time now that Batoto is closing. So many memories here..
HildxEskil
His wife is Hild not Gudrid.
Nah, Mangastream is terrible, only people who don't care about quality think they're actually good. They take too much "creative license" with their translations and often have inaccuracies as a result.
Uncompressed image size depends on scanner resolution.
Actually, it is truer to the source: when Thorfinn speaks to warriors, he is using rough language, which is totally lost in this version.
BTW, "niggastream"!? Do you have issues?
Counterweight trebuchets first appeared in the middle east not long after the fall of Baghdad in 1358. They're developed from Mongol manually-drawn traction trebuchets which in turn was developed from Chinese traction trebuchets. The Chinese traction trebuchets first appeared in the 3rd century AD used by the Eastern Han dynasty's Cao army of Three Kingdoms fame to besiege heavily fortified northern cities owned by the Yuan clan. These trebuchets were supposedly invented by Grand Strategist Guo Jia by updating similar technology developed 400 years earlier by the Mohists in the Warring States Period.
Mohist proto-trebuchets were not siege weapons. Instead, they were basically used mounted on walls to defend against sieges. In the Warring States era the Chinese states had a severe disadvantage in long range archery when pitted against the nomads, especially once the Xiongnu Confederacy formed in the 3rd century BC and the new empire's proto state arsenal started mass-producing composite warbows and heavy arrows. The proto-treb could lob a larger number of projectiles at much longer distances than the Xiongnu bows could, giving the Chinese a defensive advantage. However, the Xiongnu weren't idiots. They very quickly learned to make their own proto-trebs, only they used these to pelt city wall defenders. It should be noted that these early proto-trebs were only able to lob small stones intended to smash noggins instead of walls. When the Confederacy split in the 1st century AD, elements of the Northern Xiongnu started migrating west, bringing Chinese technology with them. Proto-trebs started appearing all over the place, in India, Circassia, Persia, and all the way into modern Scandinavia. Proto-trebs are attested to in the history of Celtic peoples of the British Isles living north of Hadrian's Wall in the 3rd century AD and again during the Roman withdrawal from Britain. All the while the Northern Xiongnu were breaking apart into smaller and smaller groups fighting against each other while migrating west.
Some of these dudes eventually became the Huns who got famous for burning down Roman cities in the 5th century AD. A very early version of the traction trebuchet developed from Chinese proto-trebs was used heavily by the Huns because, well, everybody else in Europe had similar war engines too. These traction trebs were specialized for breaking shield walls and similar formations used by the Germans and Romans encountered by the Huns and used bigger stones and an additional pulley axis to make them easier to pull. By the 6th century AD, the Hun traction trebuchet was being used by the Northern German tribes. You know, the Angles, Saxons, and of course the ancestors of our Danes.
So, trebuchets in 11th century Pomerania isn't that far-fetched because they already had the tech for traction trebs from 5 centuries before. The Vikings didn't even have to go far to get them because by that time they were already local. However, counterweight trebs are kinda pushing it. Those things have a more clearly documented history and none had ever been attested to anywhere before the 14th century.
Surrendered? Batoto's policy has always been to take down mangas that got licensed, if the demand was made. =/ This is a website for groups to post their fan translations, after all.
Will Thorfinn rescue his wife, save the cute shota, and prevent everyone from dying?
...Find out in a few more months. :V
Yeah wth is that berserk-like schedule .
Thanks a lot for this. Niggastream's translation was downright atrocious for this chapter. "YA PLAYIN DA FOOL?" Give me a break...
He can easily shoot his enemies knees with arrows. No killing there.
Will our Thorfinnbreak his oath? STAY TUNED FOR JUST ANOTHER 6 MONTHS
Maybe I just missed it, but I don't think I saw ch143. so those keeping up should go to mangastream for 143 before reading here.
Is there a better option than mangastream? It claims no compression, but the pages are absolutely smaller (and I think compressed too, or started out lower resolution?) than at batoto
Another victim of licensing? Time for kissmanga then for vinland saga.
WTF
where did all the chapters go?
Only a few french ones are left...does that mean they surrendered to those stupid copyright laws? :v
rip
oh my god.. Sudden blast of gallows humor cracked me up enough for my friend in neighbour to come check why i was cackling and shout laughing like a madman. When there is grim humor and Thorkell appearing in same chapter, it doesnt even matter does it push the plot forward or not.. it was a good chapter.
the vikings at that time had trade routes going through modern day russia and ending up in iran, thats how they were getting access to damascus steel to make swords with. so a trebuchet might not be to far fetched
Guldrid, children are not pokemon to be collected.
Wait, the Jomsvikings have a counterweight trebuchet? In 11th century Pomerania?
...Did Hild do some off-screen work for them at some point?
Good ol' Retirony.
