I hate the ending, not only is it a giant ass pull at the last second, it completely destroys any good the first half had built

it makes Daikichi look like he's grooming Rin and it's disgusting

and it's sad since I don't think the 2nd half is unsalvageable, it had some interesting ideas and plots i.e Rin and her mother reconciling, Kouki and rin's relationship. It could've been an interesting look at how the father/daughter dynamic changes when the child enters her teenage years. But no, the author decides in the LAST 5 CHAPTERS to turn it into an incestuous relationship.

"but they're not blood related" or "Rin never thought of Daikichi as a father" BULLSHIT HE RAISED HER, THEY WERE CLEARLY A FAMILY AND IT'S STILL INCEST.

Are you telling me in the 10 years Daikichi spent raising her he never thought of her as his daughter and vice versa. Not only that it makes Rin look like a hypocrite, "I can't date you Kouki because I've known you since we were young and you're like a brother to me, but the man who raised me since I was six? I want his fucking babies. And I know he'll make a good dad cause he raised me" makes me sick just thinking about it

but maybe she planned this from the beginning, fine, a romance between an older man and a young girl, got mixed feelings about it but fine.

BUT If the author wanted Rin and Daikichi to end up together she should have taken the time to write and show the audience WHY they fell in love with each other and shown the emotional and societal difficulties they go through and how they grow as a couple. she should've foreseen the massive backlash for such a pairing and done her best to justify it and make us like them as a couple it instead of pulling literally out of nowhere in the last volume.

I think what could've at least soften the blow was showing Rin having feelings for Daikichi as a child, showing us the audience that Rin, even at a young age, does not think of Daikichi as a father rather than a romantic partner. But we don't get that since the first half was almost exclusively about they're father/daughter dynamic

I'm under the impression that something changed during the writing of the second half because it's just so jarring after the first half, it's like someone else wrote it. Maybe it was editorial interference, or something happened to change her perspective, maybe sales were bad and so she wrote something to shock the readers, perhaps she was rushed to do the ending,or maybe she hates her fans and wants them throw up at the mere mention of this ending and be known as that one mangaka that made one of the most hated ending of all time

TL;DR

you know you've fucked up when even your japanese fans hate it and any adaptation avoids the ending like the plague

My only issue was Kouki's mom. wtf was her issue with not being with Daikichi apart from how Rin and Kouki would interact which was weak as shit imo. Although it certainly felt real because I know some women like that.

And to the comments denouncing the ending... well.

I am sure you're not literary majors.

when I was younger (like 6 years ago, or was it 7), well, when the anime was on the run I almost got traumatized seeing how the series really ended and put it on hold for many years until I matured enough or at least until I could mantain sanity reading how it end (or at least how I got spoiled) and it really wasn't as terrible as I though, (spoiler tag cause I derailed a little and spoil too much)

Spoiler

This is two separate manga.
Chapters 1-24: Touching parenting story. Very good.
Chapters 25+: High school "drama." Less interesting, ymmv.

Disappointing resolution: only because I find the final decision completely incongruous with the person in question's character.

The ending is discussed in comments below, read them at your own peril.

I would go for three separate manga (spoiler tag, cause it's more like a summary and my perception of the end)

in the end I would say it wasn't a bad story, but it really needs to have a mature reader to not get really pissed or traumatized by how the story goes in the end and/or to try to understand how it happens.

Call me closed minded, but I hate that I got emotionally attached to these characters. It's not even so much that the whole loving the father figure grosses me out (it does bother the heck out of me). A lot of woman have develop attachments to father figures. My problem is that for this tp even come to fruition there needed to be an emotional rollercoaster. Instead it seemed like the author was like "well this is different from the norm" and just stuck with it. Everything had a decent a!count of depth but this final decision.

Yeah Before Mary  was 14 while Joseph was 34 so who's to say i can't fk my adopted daughter even though we are 20+ years apart.

i like your idea sir i mean i do Love children in a way people do not understand i do hope humans would be more open minded and follow some if the middle eastern cultures where a 30 years old could marry a 12 years old good old times

Well maybe growing your own wife would be a thing in the near future ahhhhh i do hope so i am so happy just thinking about it. all we need to do Xaal is to prove that all humans love no matter the form men to women, men to men, woman to woman, men to his adopted daughter. IF IT'S LOVE SO BE IT ACCEPT US THIS IS WHO WE ARE I LOVE KIDS AND I AM PROUD OF IT JUDGE ME ALL YOU WANT. IF IT'S CONSENSUS IT'S ALL RIGHT

don't call the CIA please

You're a disgrace and so are the people who liked your post. While i dont agree with incest or lolicon, Xaal offered his views in a logical manner and you mock and attempt to humiliate him\her for this? You are part of the problem.

Doesn't anyone get the impression that the ending was completely the Magaka saying "Ef-it, I'm tired of this. I want everyone to hate it so I don't have to do it anymore in spin offs or whatever".....

i dont understand why some people unhappy with this ending..

imo this is good ending. maybe its me the one who wrong, but i think there's no problem about daikichi and rin married, it turn out they not blood-related so i think it still safe

Thanks, now I have the name of my new band.

Perhaps, the simple truth is that something of this caliber is not coherently understandable to the majority of the population because of the current conventions of society.

After all, a realistic example is same-sex marriage. People of an older time, especially with a more strict set of beliefs, can't swallow such a pill easily.

The type of development the author put for in Rin's love is the same way. I doubt people "are born gay", like quite a few liberal people out there would like to say, but they rather develop a conscious/subconscious way of thinking different from what's considered normal. Rin is something of this sort in a similar way, as well as those incest marriage in the news where the couple is conscious of the fact and love each other. (Let's be honest here, the author probably put that little "fact" in there about no-blood-relation just so a majority of the readers don't get too smashed by how the story was set to go.)

Considering the long history of humanity (long in human years, short in universe years I know), it's  arguable that this type of situation may have happened already - and more times than the average reader in Batoto can imagine. The unfortunate fact is that people are stuck with the mindsets of what they know and what they believe is the only reality... now if we were a race that had a link to the past ancestors that helped us to not get ignorant of things that have already happened...

Eh, wasn't this what we all hoped for? Personally I don't see the ending as a big deal. I liked both characters so why not? Not overly fond of Kouki nor his mom. Nice touch but the story clearly always focused Daikichi and Rin. I liked it. Deal with it. Whine more. QQ all day, I still like it.

I've just started reading this and I have to say I really liked it, but oh gawd her hand on Ch9 page 24 top left panel.

Just finished this all today, and as a first time reader these are my opinions:

It's an unconventional ending - by no means bad, it's just contrived. It's an exploration of real people thrusted into unreal situations, and of course I'd expect these people to have uncommon responses while simultaneously brushing against and feeling awkwardness when approaching the concept of 'normal'. However that being said the events that unfold seem detached from humanity, and what's odd about that is that it didn't happen instantaneously.

Now I'm not going to force my personal beliefs onto a piece of work, like all experiences you learn from them, not the other way around, and saying there's nothing to be gained here would be an outright lie, the whole nature of 'family' and 'the complexities of relationships with one another' are definitely explored and expressed very well. However right up to the end it doesn't feel real, it feels surreal, a quasi what-if scenario contextualized by whatever amalgam of concepts that however complex don't add up.

You'll find yourself saying 'these are not the actions of a human being that results from what predated" or similarly, imagine you go into an excellent chinese restaurant and ask 'let me get the special' and you see them working with broccoli and chicken and rice, but what they serve you is a Big Mac. Of course you would be confused, and part of you would be conflicted, maybe even a little angry, but they wont serve you anything else because they put work into that Big Mac, which they made right in front of you with the best ingredients.

Usagi Drop is that Big Mac, and if you're hungry, I'd recommend eating it, if not for any reason other than just to question how in the hell they managed to do it.

okay that's giving me an idea...
Sheesh people overreacting like some little kids. The ending was unexpected, true, but it wasn't a bad ending. It was a gimmicky one at least. The plot twist was strong in this one.

(Read this manga when it was still ongoing a few years back. Recently decided to check it out)
*Found out it was completed(?)*
*Saw the comment section full of people liking/ disliking and (sorta) spoiling the "ending"*
*Read lasgjkgkjasg's warning*
Yeah... I'm more curious and interested to know/ read the manga and it's "ending" now than before I've read the comment section.
Thank you commenter(s)!
*Starts to read from the beginning (again)*

STOP READING AT THE TIME SKIP

STOP READING AT THE TIME SKIP

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STOP READING AT THE TIME SKIP.

Jesus of fucking Christland, my eyes are seriously melting out of my sockets. They told me to stop at the time skip. They told me it was for a good reason. I thought they were just blowing it out of proportion.
WHY DIDN'T I LISTEN.

This is #1 on my nerd list of biggest regrets.

The ending single-handedly ruins the entirety of the manga. I am not being facetious. It actually, literally breaks it. No fucking joke. Not even out of morbid curiosity, please, christ almighty, STOP READING AT THE TIME SKIP.

If you are actually, seriously DESPERATE about wanting to know, please reconsider again and just STOP READING AT THE TIME SKIP.

Fuck everything.

I wanted to see a DaikichiRin kiss before it ended... Or maybe i'm just weird.
I have read this series way back from before, but I dropped it after knowing that Rin likes Kouki (I dunno why)

Glad that I finished it though.

Would've loved to see a lot of their moments, but I guess UNITA Yumi has leave it to our imaginations. :D

This should be tagged tragedy for the abomination of an ending it has. What's even worse is that the story was actually very good, all the way up until the last volume where it just suddenly kicks you in the fucking nuts. I feel robbed.

THIS.

Putting up a spoiler tag because people here obviously don't know how to use it....

im not quite  disappointed with the ending but.. can't blame him.. its not his fault.. maybe if he was a little bit more assertive, then i guess it wouldnt have end the way it ended.. kouki's mom was just way too nihilistic for her own good. i mean, whats wrong with being old?? love is immortal. LOL

Let me guess, everyone disagreed because of some morals, right?  Hey this is a manga, many things are out of the ordinary. The plot is original and surprising.

On the other hand, those who subscribed to the manga would definitely be pissed. Fortunately for me, I read it in one sitting.

Warning... don't read the comments unless you want the entire story to be revealed to you in a couple of paragraphs...
