The couple in chapter 5 is just so sad.  Having an annual affair until you're old enough to ditch your old life and move on.  It's clear that the girl's foster home situation is less than ideal (it looks like rather abusive), the narrator just wanted her to be happy elsewhere (it's highly unlikely).  Since the plan is her idea of escaping her current situation, she'll most likely to see to its finale.

Ohhhh, this is the person who did "Femme fatale".

I will say I liked the first story about as much as I could like a story about a dude who mugs people just because he's a bit short of cash and doesn't seem to give a shit.

I disagree. It's supposed to be a funny little epilogue and its depiction of both characters is consistent with what the first chapter established. I enjoyed it.

TL Note on page 11 is not correct: The "Ranzen", "Tornister" or "Affe" is not a Japanese but a German type of backpack.

The word "Ranzen" = ランドセル = "Ränzel" is an alemannic word for stomach. Leather was used back in the 19th/early 20th century to create these schoolbags.

Even nowadays, children in primary school in Germany wear "Ranzen", not only in Japan(though those tend to be made out of syntethic fabric).

It's not wrong. The "randoseru" as it is known in Japan has become cuturally-ingrained into Japanese society as a backpack for children. The source material is clearly German, of course--Japanese dictionaries acknowledge this. Reread the note--it's saying that Japanese students use it, not that it's Japanese. Word order in English can be confusing like that.
