Yeah that was a little weird for me too. I was like... ERR... Where in America are they?
Maybe there's a bonus chapter coming that will actually tie up some of the many, many plot threads that have just been dropped? Hopefully? I hope so. If this is it, that's... very disappointing.
I quite agree with you. but even if she knew my previous point still stanss.
Well, to be honest, while I would have nothing against a good story that was about moving on and maturity and such, I think this is the wrong story for that message. I mean, the only reason she's been "moving on" is because she (and her brother) were coerced by a combination of her mother going off the deep end and dictating to her and a random tragedy which made her feel like a villain for proposing to do what she actually wanted. I could get behind a story about moving on from lost love, but not a story about how the right thing to do is to give in when authority figures dictate your love life to you, which is what the direction you want would have to involve if it was done within this story's setup.
So wait...
I think you're seriously misreading it. She's portrayed more as fooling herself than as showing maturity. If you wanted something to show a limited, skeptical view of love then romance manga is the wrong genre for you.
If anything, her major character flaw through the manga is a willingness to give in to people's decisions about her life rather than insist on the primacy of her own feelings.
I agree. I feel like the mother's extreme reactions make sense IF it was genuine (we'd understand why a parent would freak out and do something hurtful, then), so the traditional cop-out feels more like a we-don't-want-this-banned publisher fiat than anything else.
Though it really hurts to see Ai giving up on life. At this rate she'd be one of those "happy" people who suddenly "has a tragic car accident" when she can just no longer take it.
I mean, even with this omiai thing, the mother looks a lot less frenzied about it, but it really feels like she's still obsessively trying to push Ai away from Yuzuru, even if that means marrying her off to some guy a dozen years her senior. There's really no reason for her to suggest it other than that, and I think Ai sees it too.
I don't feel the omiai is necessarily a pure needless drama thing, I think it goes a long way to show how paranoid her mother still is, even if she appears more stable, and it also shows how much Ai has just given up on everything after losing Yuzuru. There is some character value in it, rather than something like randomly getting hit by a car and having them all reunite because of that.
If you want a no-cop-out, pretty realistic feeling incest-romance manga, you want Koi Kaze.

omg it's still going, why...
I like this romance, but...
If I didn't know full well that it was all going to turn around in a couple chapters (not because I've read ahead or anything, just because duh) I would certainly be looking into table-flipping iconography around now. Although,
Given that making fetishes out of breaking taboos seems to be escalating, I'd be more worried about the future spouse.
Old, awful, very insensitive joke:
Oh, FFS.
or you can just translate one page in the last chapter and get the gist of the ending.
