Just had a look at the UFC rules (which are more restrictive than older organizations like Pride). The only elbow strike not allowed is the 12-6 straight down strike, a rule a lot of fighters and experts think is ridiculous, and you can't knee(or kick or stomp) the head of a downed opponent. Otherwise most of the rest of the illegal moves include clawing, gouging, biting, and other dirty techniques more at home in a street brawl than a match between two martial artists. There isn't a word about palm strikes being illegal.

 

Nowadays, most of the fighters are generalists who can do a bit of everything, but when MMA was just starting out, it was much more common to see a muay thai expert go up against a karate expert, or a wrestler against a tae kwon do practitioner. Fighters got more and more varied in their skill sets because the people that could strike and grapple were beating the guys that could only do one or the other. MMA is a fluid, evolving sport where the best combination of skills rises to the top by simple process of elimination. You see elements of Muay Thai, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Wrestling, Judo, and Boxing in MMA fights because they work the best. There's nothing wrong with learning a bit of everything, especially when being a purist nowadays means waking up on the ground dazed and confused.

Purists nowadays are weak SOBs who don't know how to use their styles properly, of course they're going to end up on the ground, I've seen a fight of a Karate fighter who didn't even know how to punch properly, and he let his face unprotected for all the duration of the match.

MMA and Sport fighters era,  are nowhere near close to a level of a real martial artist.

Few of them can actually fight for themselves, analizing his opponent instead of just acting like a puppet for their Coach to control with his voice. I can only name a fewwho can fight, of them, the most famous are Fedor and Anderson Silva

Also you do know that some of the gouging and clawing moves were actually proper techniques(not the famous ones) from Martial Arts, Karate for example had a move where you would gouge your oponents eyes out...   There is also historical evidence of Karate having anti-ground/takedown techniques that were lost by the time it became known as Karate(it used to be Shurite). Some kung-fu also has moves that deal with every single possible situation, which leaves MMA as a watered down version of those pure martial arts, however, is not like we can see aany of those tecniques nowadas, especially when many dojo simply ignore many tecniques that can't be used in tournaments, meaning sports are killing pure martial arts.

We don't even learn names of these weird people before they get killed.
