The main story is a bit weak. It's a rough patchwork of seriously harsh, traumatic things, but it never fully engages with any of them, and all the stitching is of the hazy and dreamlike early 90's shojo variety. So you get this story that focuses heavily on these feelings of despair, neglect, and self-loathing, but only to the extent that a handsome boy can pat you on the head and tell you it's going to be fine. It feels uncomfortably artificial.

Agreed. Chapter 5 has a nice feel to it.
