Description: Fonons. Essential components of all matter on planet Auldrant.

Ages ago, a new type of fonon was discovered—the Seventh Fonon. Its discovery threw humanity into chaos, for if one could use the Seventh Fonon, one could learn the future. Wars over the Seventh Fonon raged across the lands, ending only when the miasma—a poison from within the planet—covered the entire world. This is when Yulia appeared.

A fonist skilled in prophecy, Yulia saw thousands of years into the future and foresaw a way to seal away the miasma. With the guidance of her prophecies, humanity sealed the miasma deep within the planet.

Over two thousand years passed.

The world is ruled by Yulia's prophecy, known as the Score. People believe in the coming “unprecedented prosperity” promised in the Score, never straying from the path set forth in the Score which will lead them to that prosperity. They look to the Score as revealed by the Order of Lorelei, the religion Yulia founded, and hold that the greatest virtue is to follow the Score faithfully.

Yulia's Score tells of a young man who is necessary in order to bring “unprecedented prosperity.” His name is Luke fon Fabre. An heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, he was kidnapped as a child by the kingdom's enemy, the Malkuth Empire. Since his return he has been confined to his family's manor for his own safety. He has no idea of the evil that now draws close.

Based on the role-playing game of the same name by Namco Tales Studio.

The game was, and is, superior in all ways to the anime and manga, this is not debatable and yet in the comments section there are so many who actually agree with that and still call each other out. Hah hah hah! *laughs in my best Solaire of Astora impression* Hell, the cutscenes in the game were a better anime than the anime itself was. Especially the final one, it makes you feel sad and joyful at the same time. Still going to read this anyway because TotA is one of the best Tales games, and they were all good games, the combat systems alone are more fun than what FF series games have to offer.

The anime has a rushed feel, especially if you put at least around 200+ hours, including New Game Plus. Xx--Phoenix--xX has not played the game. Heck, the anime makes the boss fights ridiculous, if compared to what you had to go through to beat them in the games.

Besides, the Mystic Artes were not presented in the anime as they should be in the game.

It just so happens to be not his type of anime.

Personally, I can imagine A LOT of anime (Bleach, One Piece and Naruto) that deserve to be called lame before EVEN considering Tales of the Abyss to be lame, although I will admit the anime version cannot compare to the game version.

How many anime or manga storylines do you see the MC mess up as bad as this one and man up?

Tbh, i'm not going to mince words, the anime is trash if compared to the game.

Little mc progression(which is the strongest point of the game), bad character management, most characters are badly introduced and have poor development as well, but not as bad as the MC(in the game he start as the weakest but become the strongest later on, in the anime he start as the weakest, and ends as the weakest but with a bit of protagonism), the animations is also weaker than it should be, nope it's plain weak alright. It's ok to leave some events out of the anime, due to the sheer amount of content the game has, but they gutted the anime far too much.

Spoilers:
To be fair, I felt like the game handled the part with with Luke destroying the pillar poorly as well. Guy does later admit that he was partly to blame for Luke's upbringing, but some of the side characters were unbearable for a while because of the way they treated Luke. They also had the cheek to berate him for his lack of self-confidence and self-worth later in the game, even though they partially caused it! Gaaaaaaah!
The game is still really fun, but the 2-3 hours after this scene are cringe-inducing.

"Some of the side characters", namely Natalia.

I watched the anime a few years ago and I decided to read the manga recently, I have the same issues with this story that I had when I watched the anime.

All of the characters feel hollow, at the part where him and the rest just found out that he's a 7 year old clone, yet they all still berate him and call him a fool and turn their backs on him. You would think they would have a brain to think that he's only been alive for 7 years and that they don't know what being a clone is like, maybe his body is going to fall apart soon, since the creators of him technically don't have a use for him anymore.

So a 7 year old got brainwashed for his entire life and was tricked into destroying some pillar thing, does he deserve the blame?

I recently found out that its based on a game, so I understand why it feels like theres a lot of the story being forced into this manga every chance they get, this makes it feel unnatural and patchy.

I'm only on chapter 19 of the manga and I really can't continue with it, its just a bad manga. They're having theprotagonist (who is 7) be someone who should be apologizing for being brainwashed and tricked into doing something and then being punished for it throughout the rest of the manga by being called useless, stupid and a hindrance, which he is, but hes a 7 YEAR OLD SINCE BIRTH CLONE BRAIN WASHED BY HIS CREATORS TO FOLLOW HIS MASTERS ORDERS, SO HE IS GOING TO BE STUPID AND A HINDRANCE...

tldr: this manga sucks.

The TotA anime was probably one of the shittiest animes I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot.
All the melodrama simply ridiculed the characters. I mean, every single character had his own oh so terribly tragic sob story, with the purpose of what, making the audience stop caring? I was almost expecting a hamster to pop up, and tell a gruesome story about it's experience in jail. "A heart-wrenching story about murder, bromance, betrayal and lots of buttlove. Coming to a theater near you."

Well, if you enjoyed it, good for you.
But me, I found it incredibly tacky and will stay the hell away from the 'The Tales of...' series.
Cheers.

It's an adaption of a video game, of course it's going to suck. What else do you expect to get when cramming 50+ hours of a story into such a short amount of time? I really hate people like you, judging shit based on adaptions.

What did you expect? Manga and anime adaptions of games are rarely good.

This is Snarfles, the one who's been doing the new chapters of this series! I don't have a schedule for when new chapters will come out since I'd never stick with it, but so far it looks like I'm managing at least two a month! Just posted up 26, and 27 should come sometime in the next two weeks. I've already got the whole series scanned though, so it'll definitely get finished eventually!

does it has the same ending as the anime?

Reminds me why I called Guy my favourite character out of this bunch... <3

Thank you for scanlations~

The lesson we have learned today is never insult Luke when tear is nearby.

Snarfles... You people are lucky i dont know you guys in real life...

Cuz i would smother you guys to death with hugs!!!
A NEW CHAPTER AFTER 3 YEARS!!!
Man, thanks so much, its been literally forever since i last read this!

I'm still hopeful Wings of an Angel or somebody would finish the translation on this manga. It deserves to be finished. : ) I enjoyed the anime more than the sometimes-sloppy-art manga, it'd be great if I could get the game one day. :3
The anime is epic!
I liked tales of the abyss. Sure Luke was a whiney bitch for half the game but, once he mans up he goes "suicidal soldier on a mission" and that's pretty cool.
2 pages in English ?
mieu is cute >_<!!!!!!

and luke it's a tsundere xD
the tales of animes are horribly rushed but their games are incredible.

@Ditzuha ya i agree what you say. the anime was rushed and I think they could do a lot better but I haven't finished watching the anime kinda stopped half way through. I kinda didn't like how they looked in the anime. I like how they were drawn in the anime cut scenes in the game even they there were barely much but I still like it.

Dang now I feel like playing again. Time to finish my 4th play through (I'd be on my sixth if my MC didn't corrupt on me) and finally get Guy's second mystic art.

My personal favorite out of the "tales of" series. Seriously hate the line "I'm sorry" after a certain one >.>
@Xx--Phoenix--xX

* awww common!!!!! you can't call it lame!!!!.......the "Tales of" series are one of the most popular RPG games in Japan.....in fact...... they are just as popular as "Final Fantasy" Games.

* ¬¬ and the anime is good.....(ofcourse this last thing is my own personal opinion).....the story is just as good as the one that the game has.
The description sounded nice but then after reading it i realised that it was that lame anime that my cousin told me to watch.
