Oh, so he did get a shirt

Yes, it was his reward for rescueing the city.

The idea that people need to be "free" in order to have civilization is a modern, Western invention, with hardly more provenance than the late 18th century. For the vast majority of human history, "civilization" was built on authoritarian power structures which enforced Law (however defined by the civilization in question) and the provision of necessities to the maximum number of people the land allowed, whether by interal production (farming, etc.) and/or external acquistion (war, territorial expansion).

Methinks Satoru wasn't much the student of history, but then, pretty much every character in this short story seems to have a very short-sighted idea of what the survival of anything beyond a tribal unit takes. I'd say the Mayor had it closest to right, but of course he had be portrayed as a grasping, short-sighted egotist, or the plot would simply fall apart.

And yay, Shiro continues to not be dead! Good puppy!

Nah, the mayor was the short-sighted one. For one when oppression and authoritarian power structure goes to far, they always stall and then collapse. In a civilised world, survival must coexist with 'living' to continue, if not its nothing more than a larger gathering. Now of course you can't keep everyone happy and sacrifices have to be made. Going from current standards you can say all that's necessary is to meet the needs of the many while mistreating the few as little as possible or 'acceptable' by that few and also the many.

Order, as this guy tried to accomplish is also necessary but he obviously took it too far because of his ego, there is a difference between civilised order and oppression and when the people you are oppressing make up too much of the populace you're just asking for trouble, especially when even the people slightly higher on the pecking order still aren't satisfied as a result.

this story is weird... if all the workers/slaves are concentrating their work on energy for the city, where the hell did they get the food???...

The entire side story in one go? Awesome.

Spoiler

What makes up civilization is neither a vague notion of "freedom" nor authoritarian power structures. What makes up civilization is the accumulation, organization, and division of human labour. The authoritarian dictatorship under the mayor is one way to organize the city, and a democratic government under a city council would be another.

What's interesting about the mayor is the many times he referenced himself being responsible for building the city. Of course, we all understand it was the labour of the workers, but still the mayor still claims credit, so far as believing the city would crumble without him - a ridiculous sentiment. The city will go on without him, and will deal the problems that result as they come.

this is one interesting side story...

wow... thanks for uploading this after uploading the ch.76 on the main story...

Oh, so he did get a shirt

Didn't expect it to come out all at once, Thanks!

I see Satoru is still the giant idiot and harbinger of (his own) bad luck as usual. Good to see Shirou become top dog of a pack--I doubt they'll ever reunite, but that may be for the best given Satoru's track record of leaving behind bodies everywhere he goes.

I quite enjoyed seeing him get the well deserved shit beaten out of him for all of his dumb actions up to that point. Fortunately,

...but now who's taking charge in leadership...the bum? Ha! Well, considering how large the city was, it must have at least a handful of people with skills in domestic affairs and politics. Although they may want to reconsider not using electricity, as that city will become a scorching hell no different than outside in " the ruin" without centralized air conditioning. The tall builders will offer some shade at most, so at least there's that.

Holy shit, nice! All in one day

"Even without electricity, even without working machinery... we can build our own city"

Nope, that city is literally doomed.

The mayor was an asshole and the city was terrible, but that's still better than no city.

and i though he was dreaming it

That was... that was really different from the rest of Survival.

He keeps taking levels in badass like crazy at this rate Satoru will beat giant bears with his bare hands by the time he reaches the end of his journey D

tyvm !!!

Thank you, Dumbnut, for the warning about reading this first ( and the huge effort put into it!).
