Reread these after several years. I liked them even better the second time through. Takao Shigeru is a real genius when it comes to pathos, something many authors can't get right. She knows how to understate it and not force the reader's emotions. That's a real gift that only the best authors have. Definitely recommended.
It's a shame you only read the first one. The later ones were good. Especially the last one.
