Fun series. Straw millionaire with abilities and a competent MC are always a good combo. Things wrapped up really quickly but its not necessarily a bad thing.
Also
Well, I for one appreciate that the author didn't drag this out. I think it's a fine story for what it set out to be and the ending was more satisfying than a lot of series. It definitely would have gotten tiresome if they tried to turn this into one of those never ending series that just keeps inventing new heights for the characters to reach.
Really, I can easily believe it. After all he may have used this to measure what he can or can't do to a story.
Now now, let's all stop fighting and just agree that this wasn't very good.
I'm sure there are Japanese raws of the series somewhere. Go read those if you're allergic to translations and want to focus more on the "immersion".
Completely unsatisfying. Hard to believe the author for Bungo made this shit.
Mate, not checkmate, but mate? She aiming for a draw?
Using Tou-san instead of dad, doesn't take the quality away from a scanlation. You do get that while we may have an equivalent for the "Tou" part, we don't have anything that could be properly used for the "-san" honorific. And so changing it all to dad might actually not be a good idea, because whether it makes it a good translation or not, will depend on the point of view of the reader. After all there are people that likes to read these japanese terms because of immersion and all that.
Insisting on a quality translation is now trolling? Great point you have there, you may try again with something better.
Scanlator's choice in this context here basically means not translating the entire sentence just because.
Anyway to get away from this back to the chapter, in the chess game in this chapter Ayane's father is playing with the black pieces. The Reti opening is used by the white pieces, black does not have a reti opening. It's not anything big but as an actual player stuff like this annoys me.
When I see that term I always think of...
In this case, I think it's more like difference in opinion. I hear translators are very picky with other people's translations.
I'm just here for the cover.
LOL, the internet is filled with kids and trolls...
Reason: Scanlator's choice.
thanks for this
Tou-san? I am pretty sure there is an English word for that. (hint: 'father') Seriously, if you're scanlating into English then you absolutely should translate into the damn language unless there is a serious reason for it which here there obviously is not.
Ayane Shionomiya never makes an error. Except when she does, then she almost dies.
You fucking know it
What was the name of the girl with the eyepatch? I didn't catch her name
Edited: Nevermind her name is Olga
Nope. You didn't pay attention when the power was explained.
That is correct
There is a hole proximal to her and a remote hole, which can be anywhere, but it has to be on a solid surface. She opens the proximal hole right next to herself. So she could in theory suck a bullet shot at wall and let it come out from a hole in the air near her to hit someone, but she can't suck up a bullet by opening a hole in front of someone's gun, unless that person is right next to her. Intercepting a bullet is obviously impossible the only way to stop it is if she is near the gun when it fires.
In C11 she is shown to have a second power. She can open two remote holes as long as they are both on a solid surface, but that makes perfect sense. That is why she was able to drop the steel pipes on her opponent and make the wrench she dodged come back and hit her from the side.
The whole point of this manga is the outrageous solutions she comes up with, which is quite good and rather unpredictable. The story is not very good and her obsession with her papa is both disturbing and extremely annoying.
Seems like this authors only strength is putting together those checkmates.
Also she is not a genius in general. This is quite clear. She is only a genius chess player. That is it. She is basically an expert tactician, rather than a person of very high overall intelligence.
It would be much better if the author is consistent in depicting her intelegence's level, She is only a genius when she's about to win in a fight, while on everything else she is stupid. It doesn't take a genius to know that when doing investigations cops will monitor criminal's closest person, she just blatantly goes to her friend like an idiot that never even considering a simple fact that her act is dangerous for her friend and in the end pulling her into trouble, In other series like boku dake ga inai machi which have similar plotline it feels more believable since the MC there is consistent that he is an ordinary guy who makes a lot of mistakes and never suddenly become a genius on the author's demands like this series. When he screwed up, things go real bad, while with Ayane when she screwed up the author says "no that's not a screw up that's an elaborate level of genius planning that will make her win somehow".
Oh and that the title "Shionomiya Ayane wa Machigaenai" is a funny irony with the fact that she will always screw up and making mistakes when it is not related to battle.
Seems like she can open it anywhere, but the other end of hole needs to be on a solid surface. So she couldnt open a hole to block a bullet. And even if she did, there's a risk that bullet would hit her.
First of all: you used deus ex machina wrong. The term you meant is "asspull".
Though i mostly agree. Thats an usual problem in series with genius characters: Characters can only be as smart as the author. They simply cant construct plotline and strategy befitting a genius, therefore it inevitably turns into an asspull.
However, in this respect i would rate this manga highly since the genius part isnt overexaggerated. Even though she's smart and calculating, she makes mistakes (yes, i know the title of the manga, but thats obviously intentional). She isn't an absolute genius(she tries though) or a Mary Sue. She doesnt have a sure-fire way to handle situations. She struggles to find openings and opportunities to turn the combat around. I think as a character Ayane is very well written.
But again, asspulls ruin the whole manga. I think there's a huge amount of wasted potential. If it were constructed better, this manga would be one of my favorites.
