Description: After recently moving to Onomichi, Hiroshima, high school student Tasuku Kaname is thrown into despair at the possibility that he may have been outed for being gay. Convinced his life is over, his despair turns into shock when he sees a woman jump out of a window of a nearby house. Tasuku races to the house in a panic only to discover that it's a public meeting lounge owned by the woman he saw before. Tasuku comes face to face with the woman as she walks past him unharmed, but not before she implies that she had been watching him from afar. Confused, Tasuku follows her up to the top of a steep hill where she offers to briefly listen to what's on his mind. Although Tasuku doesn't go into too much detail, he later accepts her invitation to come to the lounge to meet others with similar troubles.

Never forget that anger is necessary energy.

Well that certainly felt like an ending! But it wasn't an ending. SEE YOU IN A YEAR

Chapter 14 was painfully awkward. As for chapter 15...still not sure about Tsubaki. It'd be easy to just peg him for being in the closet but I'm not exactly convinced. Guess we'll see! In a year.

Slow manga!

oh my god oh my god those chapters were SO GOOD

God these two chapters got way too real

"Even though they could just hide that they're gay or lesbian they're so open about it"

Goddam is that relevant today.

That line's a big indicator that Tsubaki is probably a LGBTQ person himself, but one really deep in the closet.

My GOD. Those two chapters were a knockout! Nuanced, gorgeous and powerful all the way through. I'm shook.

Spoiler

Extra props have to go to ch 14 and that utter takedown of everything wrong with performative allyship. I've never read a manga so, well, woke.

The series was originally serialised in Hibana, a magazine I actually love a lot. After the last issue got released a few months ago, the series was actually moved to Shougakukan's Manga One app! I haven't found any new chapters on there though, or the series itself for the matter, but a fellow ex-Hibana series called Achira Dochira is actually being serialised there, so maybe the series will move there soon? Shimanami Tasogare is definitely also getting online release at UraSunday though, with old chapters being uploaded weekly (chapter 10 got uploaded on Nov 29, chapter 11 will be up on Dec 6), so I think new chapters might be up in January?

Well, mangaupdates say it's still ongoing. And there are still a few plot threads left hanging for a continuation. Like fixing relationship with Misora, what exactly is Tsubaki's issue, more focus on Tchaiko-san, and who the hell is Anonymous,

Man, waiting another year to find out is going to suck.

Lol. I just realized I say this every volume but I eventually forget about it and then when it finally shows up it's like a Christmas out of nowhere:)

What's up with the end of c14? Did she pop out of the sky? Is that a flashback? Am I missing/forgetting something? Do I need to reread? Maybe I should do it anyway, this is so good.

It seems Mai is going to be a character going forward. Is she crushing on Saki? What's up with those eyes?

Man, waiting another year to find out is going to suck.

A huge thank you to those working on this over at Hachimitsu Scans! This is one series I've been waiting for new chapters on since forever. I'm glad that it's back. The latest chapter was amazing.

One of my favourite things about this manga is the characters' reactions whenever some oblivious person says something awkward. The artist captures that feeling beautifully. (God I've been there...)

Although for me Tsubaki is the most enigmatic part of the story. What's up with him? Is he an accepting, but ignorant like Koyama? Is he secretly LGBTQ himself? Is he just pretending to be a nice guy?

Given the kinds of things we saw in this chapter, and how he reacted to those goldfish, I'm currently operating on this idea:

"He's a weirdo."

THANK YOU, GIRL WHOSE NAME I DONT KNOW!!!!!!!!

Re-reading chapter 11 to 13 again, holy hell Koyama. She's like the personification of the saying "road to Hell is paved with good intentions". I can't completely hate her because she's not malicious at all, but on the other hand she really could use some tact.

Although for me Tsubaki is the most enigmatic part of the story. What's up with him? Is he an accepting, but ignorant like Koyama? Is he secretly LGBTQ himself? Is he just pretending to be a nice guy?

Because normal romance protagonists don't face social ostracism, bullying, plus disgust and disdain from the person they love, as likely results of declaring their affection.  These are "higher stakes" than simply being turned down.  I think a "duh" is in order here.

I may add, all this is because of his sexual condition, which is what it makes it more complicated because homosexuality isn't normalized, less on teenagers who every little step can make their lives a hell in their enviroment. Just look at what happens at the beginning, Tasuku is suspected of being gay and shows how bad would be the consequences of being outed. I think the first chapter is enough to clarify this.

Look, I understand why some people who don't know about the gay community thinks that things are ok nowadays seeing a lot of them and apparently there aren't problems. But there are, for example, saying this is a generic bad romance manga but because it has homosexuality as a plot element then people give it a pass and make that part the worst problem of it. You may not see it, but that's closeted homophobia. Just because is not your problem don't try to dumb it down.

I wish there were more stories like this

Hhhh I am chomping at the bit for the new chapters! So glad this is back!

It's nice re-reading chapters 11-12 and just recapping how wonderful the storytelling, the art, the layouts are in this manga. What a treasure.

I feel like that awkward person who opens a door at the front of a room full of people (my reaction to the previous posts). So here are my two cents.

1) Tasuku is cute.

2) I love characters that do introspection. Especially main characters. I do feel it's more prominent in stories where characters need to overcome something that may be considered abnormal/negative by current society, and/or something very intimate/private to the person's life. Usually more serious and less fluffy (granted, I like fluff, too).

3) The panel in chapter 8 with Tasuku holding a tablet with a sexuality quiz made me do more research; not being able to read the beginnings of the other "sexuals" bothered me a lot (lol). And holy crap, there are a lot of terms.

4) ADAPTIVE REUUSSSSEEE omg this makes my architect heart so happy.

5) Looking forward to more.

6) I know romance isn't the main focus of the series, but me and my sappy, hopeless romantic heart want to see some romance develop for Tasuku.

...6 cents?

Going back in time messed up my mind. I shouldn't have read those chapters.

On a kind-of-related note, Hachimitsu's been one of my favorite groups ever since Past Future and Boku to Boku. Reading these chapters feels like cheating, but this manga's too good to wait. I guess I'm trying to say thanks for the chapters lol

You fucked me over past me. Why do you keep doing that?

''we've got a gay MC worrying about most of the same stuff except because he's gay, the stakes are higher.''

Why are the stakes higher because he is gay?

I have lost faith in your good faith.  Nobody with two brain cells to rub together could seriously ask that question; you clearly have two brain cells to rub together, so you're asking it as a tactic.  I have no respect for people who argue tactically in bad faith.  Nonetheless, I will answer your supposed question:

Hi again, I brought some bad news last time I posted here, but the wait isn't going to be that long after all! Shimanami Tasogare v03 will be coming out on November 15 and Hachimitsu Scans will be working on it alongside Kuragehime v17 when they get them.

And most of this completely misses why I stated I disliked it. I even outright said that Hourou Musuko or Utena did it way better.
In fact let me sum it up even further.
''we've got a gay MC worrying about most of the same stuff except because he's gay, the stakes are higher.''

Why are the stakes higher because he is gay?

Are the worries other MCs in other mangas have somehow less of a deal because they are not gay?
Being gay is not your personality, its your sexual orientation. Imagine being hetersosexual and turning hetero into part of your personality and how jarring that would be to other people. Its the same thing.
My problem is not at all about it being about gay issues but with how it is being presented and how in your face it is. The plot and the characters take a backseat to the GAY part.

Spoiler

Not sure if anyone here is following Hachimitsu Scans, but after inquiring about volume 3 today. I was told that we would have to wait an additional year for the volume to come out due to the magazine it was in ending publication. I went through Hachimitsu Scans' updates and found this on one of their blog entries.

"There's also been somewhat of a shakeup for Shimanami Tasogare. Not only did it take a short break in Hibana earlier this year, but that magazine is also ceasing publication in the next issue to be released on August 7. Shimanami will probably continue in another magazine by Shogakukan, or at the very least, we still expect a third volume to come out eventually with the serialized chapters we haven't done so far, but if it takes a few months to release the next chapter in another magazine, that probably means that v03 won't be out until next year sometime. We just hope Yuuki Kamatani is able to continue it in some form." -written August 1st, 2017.

Also worth noting that gayanimeyay won't be continuing to release this either after learning the series wasn't dropped by Hachimitsu Scans.

''If you dont like everything LGBT no matter how badly written it is you must hate the LGBTBBTHEQ-Community''

I didnt hate it before, but people and opinions like yours really make it easy to hate it. You are just like furries in your permanent persecution complex that you are unable to see how much you alienate other people.

there is nothing wrong with you not liking this manga, or even just not finding it entertaining it is how you are constructing your opinion that is the problem. you can not like something and not make fun of the community it comes from just so you know. the first line of ur first comment was a little smug and made you come across in a rude manner. also comparing us to fucking furries a disgusting fetish/sexualizationg of animals is really gross...

i get where you are coming from that it isnt that entertaining but to be honest thats why i like it.. it is mostly a coming of age story/figuring out ur sexuality sort of piece while also showing that you can be in the lgbt community and make mistakes. and you can tell the author knows about this topic/has actually gone through what this story is about. seeing as the author is in fact xgender/nonbinary

you have every right to share ur opinion on why you dont like the manga and honestly i get it. it isnt exactly something new and it isn't exactly like a god send but u can not like something and give ur opinion without being an asshole.

i understand it may seem boring and ur not wrong for having an opinion it's that ur being so rude and smug about the lgbt community.

also i'd like to point out in ur first comment

"Transgender Mary Poppins creates a safe space for teh gays from mean words and bullies with sprinkles of babby´s first symbolism in-between."

it never stated anons gender/or that if they are trans or not... and honestly there isn't anything wrong with creating a safe space for people especially since it definitely is helping the people in the plot because the mc was literally going to kill himself until he found it so...... yeah.

"Hourou goes out of his way to show that there isn't just one viewpoint that is correct and the others are badwrong and never beats you over the head how people who do not accept you must all be evil homophobes despite Nitori seing them as such from HIS perspective for a time."

also it never said that anyone besides the gay characters are evil.. but it is wrong for some of them to literally call the mc slurs.. for them to make fun of the gay characters or over-sexualize them which is what they do. it is normal for people outside & inside the lgbt community to actually do this. it also makes a point of showing how even gay people can make mistakes to other members of the lgbt community. this is shown how the mc is rude to someone who doesnt understand there gender. or how the gay woman character is more open about her sexuality but doesnt understand why her own wife isnt open about it. the mc never says his friends are evil for saying slurs he even says "hes a good guy" and continues to be friends with him.

later when discussing the woman in the most recent chapter, koyama-san, they show that she isnt really trying to do harm she doesnt see it as wrong because she doesnt understand what its like for utsumi. utsumi said himself that she isnt a bad person, that shes very sweet she just doesnt know what its like for him. which is true. as much as cis heterosexuals want to be an ally they arent going to fully understand what it's like.
