I read this because I like Sheryl but man, the pacing in this is really weird. I think it could have benefited from another volume or two. I suppose the manga artist is making the assumption that you've watched the anime too, otherwise this would be a confusing read.
Much better ending than TV series and movie,,, Sheryl FTW!
So according to chapter 7, in this version of Macross F:
Well, that's one way to solve the love triangle, and would explain where the author wanted to go with this:
Creative differences of the various creators behind the series aside, that does seem to be the precedent for Macross movies: To be treated as shows-within-a-show.
Regardless, I also did word it as "effectively alternate universe", with no regards to which one among them the various creators count as "canon".
P.S.
Officially, the TV series are the actual events, whereas the Movies are movie adaptations of those events made by the people of Macross universe.
As shown in Macross 7, and them filming Macross Zero in Macross F.
Actually, the Macross Frontier movies are canon. The series writer conflicted with the creator, Shoji Kawamori and the Director, Yasuhito Kikuchi on which girl would "win" and got the producers to change the ending. Kawamori and Kikuchi then decided to lobby for a movie series so they could tell the story they intended without interference from the writer and TV series producers.
Pretty much every Macross series in existence has a love triangle between its main characters (at the very least). Sheryl is one of the the three focal characters of Macross Frontier, as mentioned below by Realta.
I second the recommendation to watch Macross F, but I would also specify that you should watch the original TV series first, before you go anywhere near the 2-part movie version to avoid spoilers... Even though the movies are effectively alternate universe with both minor and major changes to the story, just like this manga.
Does this manga relate to Macross? I didn't know that....
It's essentially telling the early days of Sheryl how she became an idol etc before you see her in Macross Frontier (which I recommend you watch).
