About manga: comparing himself to Rasputin... that guy doesn't know much history or was a total bastard...
I love Kafka as well. Many Japanese do to, apparently. For instance, Suda 51 incorporated The Castle into his games (how exactly, I don't know), and Tokyo Ghoul references A Crossbreed (and naturally the Metamorphosis).

I will admit that I can't say 100% that the Kafkaesque descriptor will hold for the entire series. It's more an impression I got from the theme of dehumanization that's especially prevalent in the first chapter as the main character is institutionalized.
But the thing that's most noteworthy here is that it is an autobiography. The character of Yuki Mamoru is based on the writer, Sato Masaru, who actually was arrested in the early 2000s for breach of trust, which he later claimed to be actually a conspiracy due to his political ties with the infamous politician Suzuki Muneo (appearing here as Tsuzuki Mineo). He's currently one of the most prolific (and controversial) political writers in Japan. I recommend looking him up if you're interested in him. Otherwise, as you read this, just keep in mind that this story is based on firsthand experience of real events (and thus necessarily will be different from Junji Ito's usual fare).
This looks like very interesting, really excited for future chapters.

I wonder how they will tie Rasputin to this besides them both being able to make their way to power quickly, perhaps a ceremonial "execution" to alleviate social pressure?

it’s a Kafkaesque autobiography of a diplomat who compared himself to the Mad Monk after getting caught in a political purge during the early 2000s.
Junji Ito, like Stephen King, breaks from the norm now and then and tries something different (i.e. cat diary, that one short story about buying shit, etc). Oh, and Pearling is a body modification some Yakuza use. Don't google it.
This is looking pretty damn good so far. Rasputin was a scapegoat as well, partially because he looked freaking terrifying, and partially because he was involved in some strange occurrences...
Oh! I didn't notice! Stylistically it seems different, funny I didn't consider that. This could be interesting!
I think this is the first time I've seen Ito as the artist of a work but not its author. I'm in, here's hoping for some good times.
I wouldn't mind more history manga. But it seems you think this is something other than what it is? Curious about what you meant.
