This manga is over 35 years old. 'Loose' drawings were pretty standard for the period. They were still experimenting, not on an Isekai Moe product line. And they didn't have CG, so everything was hand drawn, hand beta-ed, hand toned - every one of those machine dials was hand drawn (though you can see where they did some primitive copy/pasta with xerox machines).
One of Matsumoto's things is not caring if all characters in a manga have the same style. The characters just had to be internally consistent and might be reused across multiple works, in the Tezuka studio style. Besides the art, the storytelling is still a bit primitive, the 'then this happened, then this, then an alligator burst through the wall' like Korean or Chinese stuff now so that might put you off. Basically you're in it for the Burning Pen and you can appreciate it for what it is or not. Luckily there's tons of other stuff you can read.
Why is the art so deformed? The proportions are all over the place.
First 30 pages of ch.6 is the same as ch.3
I admit that the greatest draw for me on this one was the Kitaro soundtrack for the anime.
And the Dara Sedaka vocals.

Sweeeet! So glad you picked this up! more Leiji Matsumoto! this is one of his most polished and cohesive works, the master at its best! the anime adaptation of this story is incredibly beautiful and touching, it conveys a progressive sense of melancholy and impending tragedy hardly matched by any other work, it's baffling how some people have a hard time getting past his design flaws (potato heads) and appreciating the complexity of his characters and themes.
Love or loathe. I have trouble deciding sometimes.
Matsumoto's works, whatever their faults(real or imagined) have heart, and that is what matters.

Well, that and that they are the foundation that the Gundams and Gurren-Laganns and whatnot are built on.If they have seen farther, it is because they are standing on the shoulders of giants. A tall giant indeed in this case. All these "better" stories owe a tremendous debt to what came before.
Always love reading comments on translations of old manga. People not being able to appreciate cartoonish character designs and whatnot.
He is an old school author from the wild west days of manga. It isn't as polished as new stuff but the same could be said of early Superman comics where he juggled planets and breathed microscopic clones of himself. Its really the beginning of them breaking away from the American comics and cartoons that permeated post war Japan and experimenting with techniques all their own.
