Hopefully someone will pick this up, it would be a shame not to see the end.

I don't understand why everyone care so much about historical accuracy??? There are history books for that. Every book (of fiction and otherwise), documentary, movie etc relating real events have whole invented and guessed parts let alone a manga that isn't even depecting any actual historical event and inventing a good part of the story.

I can and should criticize characters that make uncharacteristically stupid decisions in comics or is not consistent with its own setup. Especially when it's done specifically to extend the drama. And am allowed to like and dislike what I want!

Sugar coating history, even in fiction, can lead to dangerous misconceptions about it.

BS. This isn't history class, this is a comic!!! Anyone trying to learn history by reading this is going about it all wrong!

Also, "dangerous misconceptions" wha?! LOL yes, I got some slight misunderstanding regarding japan in the 1900, OMG. I'm in danger! Or so says Waxes. But then we are all in danger since this shits made up anyway!

And it is a misconception that emperors didn't have ultimate power put forward by the comic. Not a dangerous one, since there is no danger involved.

Geez, anything remotely based on history and you got idiots who just can't take the comic getting criticized at all. Even with the author themselves saying 'this isn't history folks!'

Welcome to the world of comics where this comic is (It specifically says that at the beginning, it is not the past!) based on a fictional world and a fictional setting where the author can make it how ever they want it to be.

And readers can like or dislike what ever they want!!!!!

     BS, emperors have ultimate authority to do whatever the hell they want. You may have people who go against you if you brush too many people the wrong way, that's the risk of any dictatorship. That is why you set it up with people loyal to your way of thinking, getting rid of those with other ways of thinking that would go against what you want.

People here have others customs and values that's why a female emperor wouldn't be easily accepted. She is only allowed to be a empress because it is supposed to be temporary.

Yes, it's a risky bet the empress going there on her own, but it would have the best outcome. (Empress sending someone else = Shows to Russia they don't trust them)

A person's feelings have no place on a country government. It's brutal but it's still true.

Please don't apply values from this century on a manga with a Meiji era setting.

Pretty much this. One can't suddenly just deny problems because they don't like them as they would still exist anyway. Back then, common sense and norms were very different. 

     I like the main characters but the setting is brutal. Severe sexism and class-ism, almost everyone only caring about appearances, no regard for truth, peoples feelings, maybe even not so much regard for life. Absurdly strong beliefs in horribly rigid absurd "traditions" to the point of putting them over everything else. Like the emperor almost dying because of their absurdity, like they valued this other stuff so much more than her life that should be the center of their world with their heavily class-ism structure.

She should either hold onto power, not give it up to her half younger brother, change how things work. Or get the hell out of there when she can, become a diplomat like the russian suggested, since her peoples culture, sucks badly. Oh and marry him, I'm sure he could be convinced to go with you.  Though the feelings of the maid are a concern too.

The Russian characters are definitely fictional, however, I'm pretty sure that this is inspired by the Otsu Incident.

The plot thickens! Unfortunately, here I don't think we have real-life Russian nobles: since it's Akiko's twentieth birthday, we have a fixed date for this episode: 3rd August 1901. At this point, in our world Tsar Nicholas II reigns in Russia — the same who will be deposed and then executed by the Bolsheviks in 16 years — but when that happens he will only have four daughters and a thirteen year old son called Alexei, who wouldn't have been born in 1901.

Now, if in Palace Meidi's world, Alexander III still reigned then his crown prince would be Crown Prince Nicholas, and then a Prince Alexander (died a baby in our world; would be 32 years old), then a Prince George (died in 1899 in our world; would be 30 in 1901), then a Prince Michael (still living in 1901; 23 years old then), and two princesses (one older than Michael, one younger). So we have to suspend our disbelief a bit further with these Romanovs...

Since we learn that

the lady of the bed chamber, who was named Shinju (真珠　＝　Pearl） by the emperor, is the same age as princess Akiko, we have to assume that everything onwards from Akikos birth seems to be fiction, as there is no son born to emperor Meiji that fits the age difference towards Akiko accordingly, and since Shinju is supposed to be the same age as Akiko, we have to admit that the last official lady-in-waiting, Lady Sachiko, who was born ~14 years prior to princess Akiko,
is not Shinju, thus Shinju is a fictional character, similar to the crown prince born to her.
It also seems that she somehow became a replacement for the actual Lady Sachiko,
since we learn that there were 5 princesses and princes who were born and died young prior to her entitlement as "lady of the bed chamber". If we count the real children of emperor Meiji that died young, we have 10 children, born by 5 different mothers (Lady Mitsuko, Lady Natsuko, Lady Naruko, Lady Kotoko and Lady Sachiko), for a total of 4 princes and 6 princesses.
 
Now if we account that Akiko survived in this universe and Yoshihito died, we get the 5/5 premature death ratio mentioned in the manga, meaning we are somewhere around the early 20th century timewise [since Takiko, the last princess who died early and the last official child born to the emperor, died in 1899], which would also fit with the age of princess Akiko [she'd be somewhere around 19+ at the current scanlated chapter] and prince Arthur [he'd be around 50, which +- fits his appearance, although he looks more like his older brother Alfred; he was actually never shown on pictures having a full beard, and instead, he's depicted with a moustache similar to the German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II.] would also fit age-/appearance-wise.
 
This also means the Meiji era ended at least up to ten years earlier in this manga than in reality, setting the split-off to somewhere around 1900. It also seems to be either prior to 1904/5 [Russo-Japanese war] or there wasn't such a war to begin with in this universe, since empress Akiko doesn't seem to be involved too much in military discussions [although there were already several Russian agressions prior to 1900 like the occupation of Port Arthur in December 1897] and the daily life seems to be peaceful[ although the first Japanese-Chinese war ended just 5+ years prior (if it took place in this universe) in 1895].

Wow! I hadn't realized how much of a real alternate history this was. I should have known, though. The mangaka posts a lot of different research on twitter. I knew that she was drawing the palace based on real photographs of the Tokyo Imperial Palace during that time. I had just assumed she was making all of the characters up, since I knew that there had never been a female emperor. 

I found this drawing of Prince Arthur of Connaught visiting Japan in 1906, as part of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. This looks a lot like the scene in Chapter 8. Interesting.

"England's Third Prince, Prince Connaught"  Yo Author I like you but Connaught aint an English Given name it's the name of a Province in Ireland.  Just go with William man, maybe throw in a Richard or a Charles.

 

Or make Connaught the Surname to establish that in addition to there being a different Royal Dynasty of Japan that there's also been some Succession Wackiness going on in the rest of the World with Britain being formed by an Irish Dynasty instead of the Scottish House of Stuart.

 

Though the only ATL Ruling Dynasty of England I will personally accept is the Glorious House of Habsburg.

Queen Victoria's 3rd son Arthur had the title Duke of Connaught.  He would therefore sometimes be referred to simply as "Connaught".
