It does sound weird, doesn't it? I assumed it has something to do with the role, that through that incident he realized something like that if he apologized to the other guy, those that were trying to please him would stop doing it in front of him, but instead actually get angry at the boy and target him more viciously in secret. Or something about the role of the heir and/or his twisted personality not allowing him to swallow his pride and apologize. Still, weird.
But well it's not exactly like manga like this are supposed to be a realistic depiction of human character and relationships ...
Is anyone else wondering why he let something stupid like "Well, I started it/said those words myself" stop him from apologizing and saving his friend? Because that's a really shitty excuse. He lost his friend because he refused to apologize or step in, not because he fought with him and said things he didn't mean. If his friend was really that important to him, he was important enough to swallow his pride and apologize.
