The main story for some reason reminded me of "Seishun Otome Banchou" but that came out in 2013.
And this manga came out in 2008, and was Shiraishi's first manga?
Honestly I'm surprised. I didn't think she can put any comedy/spunk into her female MCs, so for her, it felt rather fresh
Her story is nowhere as funny/all out slapstick/gag like Seishun Otome Banchou, but there were touches here and there
Her female MC isn't as crazy, but definitely more "realistically balanced," in that she has her funny moments, but she acts like a normal teenage high school girl.
There are definitely still touches of the conventional shoujo storytelling sparkly style, but it's toned down.
so you don't feel the characters/story is as predictable and can pretty much guess what's the next scene/panel/dialogue is going to be.
Usually those shoujo mangas feel robotic and programmed, scenes and romance happens because they said so. Oftentimes those manga feel impersonal/not relatable.
This story doesn't have much plot, it's all about the main character, which I liked. Shiraishi Yuki don't do much character development stories these days, it's a pity.
For a 3 chapter short story, if it had more plot, the character development in a shoujo manga would be less. For this story, it was about her learning to make friends.
If you don't mind less romance/characters and wanted more plot, it's possible, but it would take a much more skilled mangaka to handle that. That is, if you actually wanted a decent/good 3 chaptered story with more plot, decent romance and characters.
While I thought another chapter would help with the romance as it was a little fast, there was some chemistry, since most of Shiraishi's romances don't work for me.
The only thing that was unnecessary was her having to move back to the country side. Honestly how was that needed for her character development or the story's plot?
How does that push story/character forward?
I'd understand if this was longer and there were more chapters and moving was a stepping stone. But there was no reason, and so very pointless.
If it brought the two closer and they had a kiss etc by the ending, then it wouldn't be as disappointing.
So yeah, stupid ending for no reason.
Other than that, it had the basics of what I like - touches of a spunkier girl that's not too weak/docile, and yet not overly dense/tomboyish or a crybaby/weakling.
The romance had good feels to them, and just ignore the useless plot by the end.
I'm super shocked this was Shiraishi's first work.
IMO, this is probably in her Top 3 of best mangas, since most of her other works are just going through the predicted flow in story/character/romance and feels very textbook.
If you like the main story and want a funnier albeit more exaggerated (in a good way) version, I highly recommend "Seishun Otome Banchou"
It was fine.
really good stories, not the typical type.
