Nocturne

This is very good. It has excellent art. And, I don't know how to put it . . . some manhwa have a kind of edge to them that you don't typically find in Japanese manga. A kind of moody cynicism, with a melancholy atmosphere that's hard to pin down. Doesn't always mean they're good--it's just some kind of Korean cultural turn or something. I actually find many manhwa that have that feel to them but aren't done very skilfully are quite annoying.
But when it's done well it can be fascinating, and this one does it well.

Could you recommend me the ones that do them well?

I feel bad for Kim Dowook. He keeps taking unexpected jabs, hopefully the author will grace him with some happiness. I'm hoping that the prologue is just a swerve and that the ending will be something more kind, but that's probably not the case.

It's a painting, a celebration of beauty of the female form. Nothing wrong with that. It's not like a buch of perverts go to galleries to whack off. It's a place for culture.

Really like the atmosphere in this, every time I read a chapter I can't help but imagine the weather there is perpetually overcast and cloudy and I don't mean it in a bad way, in fact I really enjoy overcast weather with sunlight still shining behind the clouds but not enough to blind you.

I feel during overcast days everything feels a bit more slow paced, less chaotic and noisy and that's the exact feeling I get when I read this story, it doesn't have those characteristic shoujo bubbles and sparkles or energy instead there's a lot of subtleties and its a slow yet deliberate pace to it, definitely makes it stand out.

It's been subtle . . . kind of . . . well, largely unspoken anyway, which isn't quite the same thing . . . but really I think practically the whole story is about romantic and/or ultimately sexual tension between Yuri and her guardian.  All the relationships have that underneath them one way or another--they're driven or hindered or both by the two of them feeling, feeling jealousy over, or trying to pull away from, those feelings and that bond.

So people worrying about an "Usagi Drop" ending are kind of missing the point.  Where in Usagi Drop the whole story was about other stuff and pretty much nobody saw anything that foreshadowed a direction like that in the "father"/"daughter" relationship (making it rather a bogus finish), in this manhwa there really wouldn't be a story without that kind of ending being a possibility.  It won't necessarily happen, but if it weren't "in the air" the whole thing would fall apart.  The story will end when the central conflict is resolved either with them having a romantic relationship or definitively averting it.

Also, Yuri is going to have terrible knee and joint problems wearing nothing but heels, and from such a young age.

That's probably because the last few have been heavy with flashbacks.  I hadn't read this in probably about a year or so, so I started from the beginning.  You might want to do the same.  If you like, you can read my quick synopsis of chapters 1-40.

The story begins right after the death of Oh Suh Min (she was driving drunk and killed a man in the process).  In her will, she asked that Do Wook take care of her daughter Yuri.  Against the lawyer's advice, he agreed to do it, and took Yuri home with him.  He kept her at home most of the time, which she was fine with because she felt that she only needed him in her life.  She didn't go to school and just drew for most of the day, although he later began taking her to "tuition classes" (or something like that; not sure exactly what those are, but I'd guess it's kind of like a private school/tutor).  At one point, the wife of the man Oh Su Min killed wanted to meet Yuri, but Do Wook wouldn't allow it because he was sure the woman would try to place the blame on an innocent child.  However, the woman followed them and confronted Yuri when she'd gone to the bathroom, and convinced her to come with her home.  However, the woman didn't hurt her, and simply returned her home.  As Do Wook and Yuri became closer, it drove a wedge between him and his girlfriend (who apparently first asked him out in high school), and they broke up.

 

The relationship between Do Wook and Yuri remained close until she began to show signs of physically maturing, and when her period started in the middle of the night, he called for a certain woman to come help him.  This woman (I forget her name) happened to be the wife of the man that Oh Su Min accidentally killed while she was driving drunk (the one who had abducted her when she was younger).  She had previously offered her help in raising Yuri, likely in the hopes of getting some money, as she's indebted to loan sharks.  She also has a son the same age as Yuri named Bum (yes, I know).  Bum's mother went to their house on occasion to look after Yuri, and Bum went along, and they played together.  One day while they were riding his bike (he pedaled, she rode), she told him to go fast enough to catch a bus (something he bragged about doing before), and they got into an accident.  Yuri received a few cuts and scrapes, while Bum broke (or otherwise seriously hurt) his arm.

 

Bum's mother snapped and finally told Yuri the circumstances of her mother's (and Bum's father's) death(s).  Yuri was devastated to hear of this, and horrified that she was somewhat like her mother in this way (she caused Bum to be injured, in her own eyes).  She felt so guilty and indebted to Bum that she decided she wants to make him happy, although we've yet to see just how she intends to do this.

 

Chapter 39 & 40 are beginning to show us the circumstances that led up to Oh Su Min's death.  From what I've gathered, she was struggling financially, but had a job as a waitress.  She invited Do Wook to bring his girlfriend (the woman he's dating when the manwha begins) to where she worked, and they became regular patrons, but she soon became jealous of their relationship being flaunted in front of her.  Although neither of them confessed any feelings for the other, it was pretty obvious they liked each other.  No reason is ever given for why they didn't become more than friends, but both seemed to have closed off or guarded hearts, so they were likely afraid to go further than being friends.  Also, when Oh Su Min got pregnant, she probably didn't want to drag anyone else into her problems...but that's speculation on my part, they never really mention it.

 

Anyway, Oh Su Min (this is still a flashback) was apparently garnering complaints on the job, causing others to wonder when she'd get fired.  One night after work, her manager offered her a ride, and she took it...and the next day she was still working there.  Hm...Later, we see a scene of her boss stopping by to check on her when she apparently took a sick day at work...and he tells her that he's divorcing his wife.  He also mentions that it'd be good if he had a wife who was affiliated with the bar...So basically, he asks her to marry him.  She gets emotional, as no one has proposed to her before (although I gotta say that was a sucky proposal), but then he drops a bomb: he's not willing to take care of her daughter.  So if she marries him, she has to get rid of Yuri.  Also, he gave her a necklace as a present, but she said it didn't belong to her and told Yuri not to touch it.  Yuri got mad that she had been so cold to her lately, so she purposely broke the necklace.  Oh Su Min slapped her, Yuri cried, and the landlady complained about the noise.  Su Min called up Do Wook to take a picture of her and Yuri for her 4th birthday, and that's where chapter 40 ended.  It's implied that she's about to take her boss's offer.

I like this manga and agree with everything Purple Library Guy said but I dislike the way lips are drawn, makes me feel like the characters will die of dehydration at any moment.

The only worrying thing for me is where exactly this manga is headed(relationship wise), ever since Usagi Drop I've been overly conscious of that part.

Also, does anyone know Yuri's age? Chapter 31 has left be bewildered and countless premonitions for what I'm most worried about are all there :S

As of chapter 40, I think she's 12 or 13, which is about the average age for when girls start their cycle.
