Description: | Suzuki is a troubled boy. He's lived with uncaring foster parents for most of his life, alienated from the other kids at his school, owner of a cynical, unhappy mentality. Komatsuzaki is a violent, unpredictable bully whose head trauma causes him to act in mysterious, inexplicable ways. Arakawa is a no-nonsense, normal girl who pines after Komatsuzaki but can never have him. A teacher with just one working eye. A mother who committed suicide. A daughter in an endless coma. Attempted rapes, murders, extortion, sexual deviance, and a freakish explosion in the butterfly population. All of these elements are whirled together in a story spanning 10 years, a tale of blackness, pain, and apocalypse. And maybe just a bit of hope and redemption. It's a spiritual cross between the misanthropic suburban malevolence of Kyoko Okazaki's Rivers Edge and the eerie mysticality of Donnie Darko. |

Wait are there only 13 chapters?
it was good, a nice psychological seinen manga, but punpun was better, and the deepness of the story it was too much guided by dark side of the emotions, you can have soft and deep moments too, but if it only focuses in that way, you loose the element of surprise.
These butterflies are deep.
Just finished it and I can't say I liked it.
It wasn't boring by any account and I read very quickly, but the whole manga view and atmosphere is very japanese specific.
It may describe at some level the darkness of japanese society, but
it's irrelevant for the rest of the world.
And the dreamy and lyrical narrative when you are handling so serious and horrific stuff is quite pretendious, even sick IMO. Not something new in this type of manga though..sadly..
Even now, years after it's release, this remains the best manga ever, imho. 5+ stars
Asano Inio's works are always so disturbing, yet you get the feeling that they are backed by a lot of deep meaning and emotion. Perhaps they reflect his own depression?
Nice manga. I understood most of it, quite interesting the way of thinking from the author, but i do not agree with his views. Still fascinating 10/10
surely, this mangaka, all of his work is somehow sad, depressing, and yet fascinating...
