Description: A quirky children's book by one of the most famous Swedish contemporary authors of children's litterature, Eva Lindström.

From the cover:
I saw him on a nature show on the TV.
Then we met outside the supermarket.
His bag was broken.
I got to help him home with his things.
For a while he worked with drilling holes but it didn’t interest him so he quit.
Lage is his name.
We are friends.

The book was made into an animated movie by the same name in 2015, and was followed by the book "By the Long Wide Foot of the Mountain", which focus on side character Janne.

So you're the scanlator! Nice -- thank you.

It does sound like people are missing the point if they just copy her style and rendering it a cliché. Then again, that tends to happen when things catch on. Will be looking out for Janne and his tale of "well kids, sometimes you're just not very good at this life thing so thank the stars you weren't born American with their anti-social not-so-safety net..."

Her style is super interesting. It's a more sophisticated, intentional version of how children actually draw, with the skewed 2D perspectives and all the little details (kids are not good at 3D, sorry Rembrandt).

Though, for a children's book with an owl for a character, it sure reads like a 20-something bildungsroman, like a mini version of Asano Inio's Solanin or some shit. I met this guy, he's from the country, tryin' to make it in the City, he's got some gigs, it doesn't always go well, he settled down for more ordinary things, we are still friends, et cetera.

Yeah, I didn't like Solanin much.

I love her style as well, though unfortunately every illustrator under 30 in Sweden have copied her style in some bland semi-childish mess that is completely missing her uniqueness. I'm still pretty amazed that she managed to get this book published though considering the story as you pointed out. The sequel "By the Long Wide Foot of the Mountain" is even worse from a childs perspective, about the miserable life of the misfit Janne, and how he fails whatever he tries to do. I'll get on scanning it as soon as I work out the drivers for the new scanner I found.
