Actual Japanese gay men read a different genre which is much more sexual and visceral.
You're totally right about yaoi being emotional porn. Although not all yaoi has an emotional focus, some of it is just sex. I mean, yaoi IS still actual pornography.
Even though I am not a yaoi reader, this had the "aw, derp; how cute" criteria put into it.
But, if every single yaoi manga out there is like this..I can see how the genre will just seem trite and overly pampering to the point it just seems like porn.
The same is pretty much correct for any other highly intimate genre which requires a shit load of physical contact and or a lot of emotional-focus on the security of the relationship (yuri, ecchi, harem, shoujo-esque romance). It's all just too idealistic, to fantastical to be actually rewarding. After a while it really does feel like emotional porn.
That being said, most of ya'll that actually read this sort of stuff hardly give a shit. This was made for the 'aw, derp; how cute' demographic to be rinsed and repeated an infinitum. =)
