My thoughts on how to explain the last few pages...

Just at ch.2 and one thing I just can't let slide.  In class he reads out a passage in English about the wonders of the oatmeal-raisin cookie like it's the greatest cookie on earth.  Oh, please!  Could we get real?  What, they never heard of chocolate chips in Japan?

So.... If she has sex with him, does he turn into a fetus?

What may be more shocking is the final page advert...those are names I haven't seen in a while.

That's was hilarious the guys in class demanding the girlfriend to give them back their teddy bear.

Yes. Chapter 24 is the last chapter.

That alternative "translation" (and I use that word loosely) is completely inaccurate.

For one, Inoue doesn't use the past tense for the verb "to meet" (he says 会う (to meet) and not 会った (met), so it's clear that he doesn't know that the meeting already took place, and this makes sense since Inoue sees Karin with (an overweight) Takuma, which leads into the next line where he clearly offers to play Karin's boyfriend by saying "杜野のかわりに" (in Morino's place) and やってやる, which is used when you're offering someone something (it would basically be translated as "I'll do it for you"). On the next page, Inoue doesn't say "we" followed Karin to the reunion, and he doesn't make any indication that anyone else was with him. In the next bubble, he says やっぱ心配じゃん?, which is basically him saying that the reason he did it was because he was worried about her, and the way he says it is like he's trying to get her to agree with him. And this makes sense because, why would she be worried about anything?

 

So I don't think you should put too much faith in whoever translated it the way you said.

 

Thanks for the explanation! Pretty much everything else in the two translations was the same, and the online translators I tried made gobble-dee-gook out of what Inoue said. Your help is very much appreciated!

After reading chapters 16 and 17, not only might I start believing in Holy Miracles, I feel as if I owe Karin an apology...

Haha! Funny that you say that but, even though I live in the U.S.A., American TV is not my thing. The last sitcom that I regularly watched was Seinfeld, which ended in 1998, so it must be a result of reading all that manga... Otherwise, I don't really disagree all that much with either your or rozzak's comments.

Takuma finds out that Karin lied to him when she said that he was the first person who had ever confessed to her. Perhaps, due to her abysmal shallowness, the previous confession didn't count in her mind since the guy wasn't hot. No, wait. The Takuma that confessed to her wasn't hot, either, so maybe it was just a blatant lie, after all.
Karin finds a replacement for Takuma. If she doesn't actually fall for him at all, it will be like a Holy Miracle. But I'm not holding my breath on that one. I wouldn't be surprised if, when the hot guy asks Karin if she has a boyfriend, she tells him, "Absolutely not!" I also wouldn't be surprised if, at that moment, she will actually have forgotten all about Takuma. Her lust for hot guys is still obviously far and above way more important to her than her "love" for her boyfriend.
Just how long will Takuma have to endue heartache and suffering as a consequence of Karin's thoughtlessness and, especially, her lust for hot guys?

Sure she might not be the ideal shoujo protagonist, but she is at least as honest as she can without trying to hurt others.

And lets face it, there ain't that many shoujo girls that go after the ugly guys proudly (Know a few but they were mixed with some science fiction or fantasy.)

Omg.. The male lead is adorbs.... Like a cuter version of snorlax...

Karin is certainly one of the most shallow, self-centered, inconsiderate and thoughtless shoujo protagonists that I've seen in a while. I find it very hard to feel the minutest amount of sympathy for her even after 13 chapters. My biggest beef is her continued comparisons of her boyfriend to "hot" guys, even his own brother, which demonstrate just how superficial her "love" is. Since Takuma can't satisfy her hunger for "hot" guys, she should stop stringing him along, break up with him, and go find some scumbag "hot" guy that will satiate her cravings. Takuma definitely deserves better.
