Holy shit! Some of these comments here, man... It is correct to dislike the situation Japan had in the 80s, but don't get all misandric for no reason. Patriarchy is long abolished in the western world. Japan still needs some work done though but it has more to do with conservatism than actual patriarchy.

yeah i mean it's not like it's an easily researchable fact that the vast majority of wars and/or rapes were and continue to be caused by men, i mean it's not like 80% of the united states congress, 100% of the presidency, and 77% of the supreme court is made up of the gender that has historically been massively overrepresented in western government, i mean it's not like united states families headed by single women are twice as likely as families headed by single men to live in poverty. none of those things are facts that you can google so i guess you're right, misandry is a totally real and not made up by sexists problem and much bigger than institutionalized misogyny

also correct: japan is part of the west now apparently

This was brilliant. It's not often I read something that scratches my twin needs for epic, ridiculous melodrama and patriarchy-smashing uber-feminism. Nothing much to add to Gale's perfect mini essay except screw men. We get 90% of all stories portraying us in a positive light, yet we're responsible for 90% of all wars, rapes, etc; there's more than enough room in manga for some well-deserved frustration with men. And if you're genuinely offended by the story's portrayal of assholes, stop identifying with assholes.

Classic, indeed. :)

Honestly, I think the story ultimately treated the men better than they deserved.

... Okay, this got absurdly long for a response to a short comment from over a year ago. I just finished reading this manga, and I guess I just had a lot to say about it. Like, a LOT to say about it. I really liked it; I often feel a little glum when reading josei manga, since it often feels like the characters are just inured to a certain level of grossness from men, and because everyone's an adult, the grossness can be generally more intense than it is in shojo. I did enjoy this as a love drama, but I really appreciated having characters who would challenge that kind of thing. I guess it might just appeal to my Humourless Feminist Spoilsport side, but if you feel like a strong, tragic but beautiful love story, and feminist ideas don't throw you into an uncontrollable rage, give this a shot!

That trope is played twice but I don't think they really count as two seperate stories, the young woman in the second arc is the businesswoman in the first arc.

The conversation is so deep....the ultimate classic indeed.

Classic, indeed. :)
