Shoujo ai tag plz

I speak Chinese, Japanese, plus a smattering handful of Chinese dialects. I also have an interest in linguistics.

... We need a Chinese speaker to know exactly . ..

Gratuitous Japanese, that's why.

--

Longer explanation: Because Nuan(3) Nuan(3) isn't exactly a... marketable name in English. Chinese names are notoriously hard to pronounce for English native speakers, due to tones, short syllables (which often have diphthongs and triphthongs in 'em, plus the main vowels in those n-phthongs tend to be the other way around compared to their English equivalents) , and the counterintuitive nature (for English speakers) of Pinyin transcription ('q' and 'j' are both variations on /ch/, for example, and 'x' is sorta like /sh/). Nuan(3) Nuan(3) itself is also somewhat complicated thanks to tone sandhi -- doubled third tones undergo a sound change such that it is pronounced as Nuan(2) Nuan(3) instead (similar to nihao, because an actual sequence of repeating third tones would take forever to pronounce).

For a similar reason (and speaking from first-hand experience), Chinese people who regularly speak in English with non-Chinese speakers tend to adopt 'Western' names because, well, really, your friends ain't gonna get your name right.

(Bear in mind that 'Nikki' isn't necessarily a Japanese word or name -- it can be a variation on Nicole/Nichole/Nicola/etc. instead).

this is Chinese so i may be wrong but in Japanese Nikki 日記 is a diary/log

If we take each kanji of the title 奇迹暖暖 the japanese signification would be

奇 - strange/curiosity

迹 - impression / mark

and

暖 - warmth

I think that the kanji were the source of  "Love Nikki" (love diary)

But as i say this is only (my own) speculations based on the fact that alot of kanji kept the same signification when they were imported in Japan from China. ...

日記 is "diary" in both Chinese (ri4ji4) and Japanese (literally meaning "record of days"). 奇迹/奇跡 will be interpreted as one word by both Chinese and Japanese native speakers, as "miracle" (pronounced qi2ji4 in Mandarin Chinese and kiseki in Japanese). So, no, they won't come up with "diary" based on those kanji/hanzi, especially since the Chinese title didn't even have the word "diary" (which is the same in both Japanese and Chinese) in the first place.

Tangentially, it is interesting to note that in Japanese, 日記/nikki is pronounced using on'yomi (sounds derived from historical Middle Chinese pronunciation mostly in the Tang to Song dynasties), like a lot of compound kanji words. Similar pronunciation is still retained in some modern Southern Chinese dialects -- Hakka for one pronounces it as 'ngit-ki'.

奇跡 (kiseki) is another one such word. Taiwanese Hokkien has a similar pronunciation -- 'ki-tsik'.

I, too, haven't got a clue as to where that Nikki came from and am interested in learning the reasoning behind this instance. I probably used instance wrong.

why does 暖暖 = nikki ? I thoguht it just means warm / soothing as an adjective in this context

If my memories right, it's the Protagonist's name rather than adjective, Nuǎn nuǎn?, which officially translated to English as Nikki (unknown reason).

Ahh yeah sorry. Maybe I should've included a translator note. The main character (of the game, doesn't appear in the first chapter here) is called 暖暖, but the English version of the game calls her Nikki instead. A lot of the names don't quite match up due to localisation.

For the characters who have shown up in the English version already (English version/LN is behind Chinese version by 10/20-ish 'chapters' of the game), I will use the English version's name for them. For the ones who have yet to show up, I will come up with a translation that is fairly true to the Chinese name.

Misread title name. Thought it was about that Yandere.
That was cute.
