It was medieval religion that INVENTED science—the School of Paris, which was set up to train theologians. It was the "Enlightenment" that brought about racism (to the medievals, the black-skinned Ethiopian was at worst a "funny foreigner", while the blond-haired blue-eyed Norseman was the barely human savage), and the Renaissance that brought about witch-hunts. (In the Middle ages, HUNTING witches was what got you burned. Look up the Council of Frankfurt and the Council of Paderborn.)

Medieval women had EVERY legal right men did, including every property right and even voting. The Renaissance was the "rebirth" of a culture, Greco-Roman antiquity, where women were legal minors AT BEST—for most of Roman history, they were livestock, legally.

This kind of thing is pretty ludicrous from a country that found out the Earth is round from Francis Xavier (and where women who want bigger busts drink a lot of milk...which isn't cannibal logic, "if you eat his heart you gain his courage", at all). A country that had to make it illegal to look up other people's genealogies NINE YEARS AGO, for fear of discrimination against the descendants of the "eta" caste, doesn't get to set this kind of story in anyone ELSE'S history.
