Description: | The great demon Mao Dante, exploiting the weakness of a boy exposed to his demonic influence in his dreams, is awakened from a thousand-year sleep. The intent of this being, a survivor of an ancient and forgotten civilization, is to wipe out the whole human race. But it's not that simple: the motivations of the demon aren't so wicked as one might think, and they will combine with the life of the boy, which hangs between nightmares and craziness. In the meanwhile, the Satanists fight against the hierarchy of the church to obtain a justice which is, as it's easy to guess, that of the demon Mao. This series didn't have an ending until it's remake in 2002. Nagai took many ideas from Mao Dante into Devilman. |

Don't badmouth Go Nagai, he is a legend.
This is alright, but nowhere near as good as Devilman in my opinion.
What? Are you blind? The artistic skills are phenemonal and way beyond the ability of most manga now. No one here can draw like this I assure you. You might not be comfortable with the way Go draws his human characters and if anything that is his preferred styled, but the attention to detail in the backgrounds and on the beasties are fantastic and composition is way beyond what most people do. Most manga artists suck at background and detail. This is certainly an old aesthetic but you're a fool to suggest this is a kid's story with bad art.
That being said, this is my least favorite story of his and I find the anime version to be even worse though it does manage to give the story some sort of conclusion. It starts with a strong concept but kind of loses it past the initial Mao Dante rampage. Devilman that comes after is far more polished and a masterpiece.
