Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Tsuioku Hen

I red this manga and now am not sure how to feel about the mother. Should I hate her or pity her? Does her death play a bigger role in the LN? I tend to rather hate her but it might also have been the case that she wanted to help him as a mother to achieve a better life although a life without emotions is really not it

The Family knew when he was born what his powers would be and how big of a threat to the planet he was. Originally, he would have only been able to use his two superpowers. In order to increase his abilities with other magic and to prevent him from destroying Japan because of a temper tantrum, his mother severely limited all his emotions except for his love for his sister. Doing so had two effects on her, the strain overheated her brain, weakening her greatly, and it also limited her own emotions just like his. Making her unable to love him as much as she had.

Actually, Tatsuya tried to save her, but he was helpless. Sakurai used all her "life force" for that barrier. "Regrowth" can only restore the physical things like flesh and blood, but not the abstract things.

To answer your question about why Tatsuya didn't save her, it was because Honami-san asked him to let her die.

Kinda sucks they glossed over the reason why Honami is no more and the downside of her powers. Reading the comments made me think it was more than enough of a damn good reason to include. Unless they will touch up upon it again in later chapters, because I could be speaking too soon.

I don't really know much about this Honami-san character but can anyone explain to me why is she just killed off like that? As Tatsuya has the power to revive and turn people into ashes it's obvious who killed her, but why :-?

It was explained in the light novel volumes how she died. Since it is not easy to find them I will just do a quick explanation. Honami-san was a genetically modified magician designed to be really good at barrier magic (which has its uses when being assigned as a guardian/bodyguard.) Although many main magic families were genetically modified when they were first founded, Honami-san was modified as an embryo which apparently allows for a more controlled modification. The downside to this is that they have decreased lifespans which can give out when they overuse their power. Honami-san deployed barriers to protect Tatsuya from the naval bombardment while he was aiming. This was the first time Tatsuya used Material Burst and it took much longer to set up and had a reduced range. Even though Tatsuya wouldn't die if he was hit with the bombardment it would interrupt his casting. Thus Honami-san used up all her power creating a barrier to withstand multiple salvos of warship bombardment (I think the ships used railguns or some other high tech weaponry.) Honami-san used up all her power to defend Tatsuya and then died.

To answer your question about why Tatsuya didn't save her, it was because Honami-san asked him to let her die. She had unilaterally made the decision to defend Tatsuya to the death and had asked him to let her die in a way that she chose. She told Tatsuya that Yotsuba guardians never choose how to die or make their own decisions and that therefore she was proud to have given up her life freely. Although the manga doesn't show it, Honami-san is the person Tatsuya has felt the most grief over (as much as he can.) He and Miyuki both feel indebted to her. That is why Sakurai Minami was chosen as Miyuki's secondary guardian later on. She is from the subsequent generation of the modified magician model which Honami-san was from and due to genetic similarities she looks similar. Tatsuya's and Miyuki's aunt (Yotsuba Maya head of the Yotsuba Clan) placed someone who they might feel guilt about amongst the siblings to discourage any behavior which might be against the Yotsuba.

I've been curious about it for a loong time now, and reading pure text for too long on a computer screen makes me want to peel my eyes out tbh - which is why I haven't read all of the LN volumes on baka-tsuki. Although, I didn't know they've translated that far. Did you read the raws? Either way, I'm very thankful for it.

I'm disappointed in how they didn't aim for more of a war story though, because if the story's focus is on the relationships then I feel like the story loses the feeling of exploration and makes it turn into something more average. That's just how I feel though, maybe there are others who'd prefer this kind of set up in the story.

Although, I didn't know they've translated that far. Did you read the raws? Either way, I'm very thankful for it.

Honoka is shocked (as are pretty much everyone who found out Tatsuya/Miyuki are Yotsuba), but she accepts it and continues to pursue Tatsuya... even more forward... to the point she gets on my nerves.

It seems kind of ridiculous someone could just be created with such insane powers as Miyuki. Why wouldn't they just start constantly genetically engineering ridiculous members of their family, then? Is she actually unrelated to him, not even like the egg of their mother being genetically modified? Honestly, it'd be a little bit sad if she was actually completely unrelated, after all is said and done, with the kinds of feelings she's been carrying around the whole time. I don't really like how this bodes for her feelings though. It's sweet how much she cares about him, but I'd hate to think she was genetically hardwired to be that way towards him. It'd literally be like two robots programmed to 'love' each other. 

 

Similarly, I'm kind of curious if the Yotsuba intended for her to actually get with him, since they seemed to have gone through so much trouble? I mean they are pretty openly defined as siblings, so you'd think the world around them would grimace if they openly became a couple.

Because Miyuki is a one of a kind, will never be surpassed for all of existence, goddess descended upon Earth female protagonist in a shounen story.

There is no 'why' and its not 'sad'. Its entertainment. If you've stuck with the story for this long, either you're too ignorant/immature to realize whats going on , you don't care , or you're just here to see people's reactions.
