Like a Laika

Yeah, you're right, it was the Soviets. But I think Russia is fine as there are now a lot of readers who were born after the collapse and never knew the USSR (I'm old, I do). And thank you! But it's not just me, there's a whole group of talented folks at work here. I'm just the loudmouthed one!

My personal policy is keep the translation as factually correct as possible. Don't assume all readers are stupid, and even if the littl'uns don't know what the USSR is, it's up to them to find out, or you could include a simple T/N to explain it. This is how one learns from reading, even if the reading material is manga. Hell, I learned an awful lot from reading manga.

But yeah, the whole team did a wonderful job scanlating this

The series that the author started from the one shot ended up going nowhere and I guess either got cancelled by the editor or the author just stopped drawing it so it was sort of whatever. It's a nice one shot though. Like 99% of the 4 seasons winners.

I think the intent is actually the Captain saying he's the male and it's kinda provocative to him, so she should wear something a bit more demure.

But I see your confusion, especially as the dialogue bubbles don't really point to the speaker, and the Captain does call her Matsumoto-kun, not -san or -chan.

The conversation with the robot was my favorite.

In the one bit where the captain is giving the MC a very mildly hard time about how she dresses, I think there's maybe a mistranslation or something. The dialogue as translated seems to be implying she's a man who should stop cross-dressing, but she's wearing shorts and a t-shirt and she's got boobs, so if she was a man those clothes wouldn't be cross-dressing and anyway I'm pretty sure she's a woman. I suspect the intent in Japanese was some kind of "You're a crew(man) and should be a little closer to 'in uniform'" sort of thing. Obviously, could be wrong, haven't seen the original and couldn't read it if I did, it's just a suspicion.
