One problem here is that IMO she's already pretty cute without the makeover, so the whole "Oh, it couldn't be the plain glasses girl" schtick ends up looking a tad forced.
Of course, the manga's in good company--Hollywood movies often have the same problem.

i feel a bit tricked, the cover made it look like one of those newer styles where there's less misc details and very clean lines, but then it turns to be usual shoujo style after you open it up XD
