yeah those pesky jap DD(kagero) and sometimes ambushing jap cruisers(mogami and the mighty Zao) with torpedo T T....
i can sympathize with Avery, from time to time in WoWS you just can't turn into the torpedo and have to turn away from it... but that usually means you get sandwiched between live torpedoes and either keep running along with them in between or stop to let them pass and then turn.... in which case you turn into a pin cushion for shells.
Now that's how you write a proper synopsis.
Obvious mistranslation and they fixed it in Version2 to 30cm, which is means its a pair of 12" guns, which is more than enuf to sink our ship of Moe
Not sure why it took me so long to find this one. The cast is endearing and great fun to follow.
I'm so glad the author didn't turn this into a serous story as his notes said had considered. That would mean the ship and crew end up sunk at the end. As is, I can imagine them finally facing a US carrier group loaded with loli pilots. After an initial firefight, the whole pacific conflict devolves into a giant yuri orgy.
Came here to point that out. The Iowa-class battleships only carried 16-inch guns, for god's sake. During WWII, US light cruisers generally carried 6 inch guns while heavy cruisers had 8 inchers. The art clearly shows two 2-gun turrets, which is an unusual layout for US cruisers, which generally had three 3-gun turrets. I'm not aware of any US cruisers that had only four main guns. They may have meant 300mm, or about 12 inches. The Alaska-class "large cruiser" carried 12 inchers, but it carried nine of them, in the usual 3x3 layout.
4 x 30 inch? Either that cruiser is mounting guns twice as big as those on the Battleship Yamato, or that's a translation error.

Thanks, Oppai-Missile Translations, for another volume of one of my absolute favorites. Kurogane PukaPuka Tai continues to be an absolutely great read. Looking forward to the continuation. (I'm still madly in love with Mamiya.)
I didn't mention it earlier, but I have totally fallen in love with Mamiya. Tall chicks with princess hairstyles who are awesome with katanas combine two of my favorite fantasies. Now: how do I get her to notice me instead of Cmdr. Kuki? Her battle aura also leaves me breathless.
I did a bit of research on billets/rates/ranks and history of the Imperial Japanese Navy per the page:

What I came up with was:
1. Imperial Japanese Naval organization was modeled mainly on the Royal Navy, starting in 1867-1868, when a British Naval mission, headed by a Captain Tracey, was sent to Japan to help start up the Naval School of Tsukiji. According to Wikipedia, Britain was the main model for the IJN from 1870-1918, with France also providing training missions and ship building. An Imperial Decree from 1879 proclaimed that the Royal Navy should be the model for the Japanese Navy's development.
2. What I came up with for Royal Navy during this period as regards ranks and billets for officers:
a. Captain of the ship was the Captain - means what it says: in overall charge, Commanding Officer, bottom line.
b. On a small ship, the ship's "First Lieutenant" (post or appointment, not rank) was the second in command (Executive Officer was pretty much American at that time, not a British or Japanese title), also known as the Number One (remember Star Trek TNG). This officer was in charge of the deck division, formerly known as "construction" which included the crew, damage control, and all physical care of the ship except the power plant (engine).
c. On a larger ship, which had a "Commander" (again, a post or appointment, not rank), the commander was the second in command, with more limited duties, and there was still a ship's First Lieutenant, who had the same duties in construction or deck division, as on the smaller ship. In the Chain of Command, this officer came after the Commander.
d. Up through WWII, the officer in charge of all weapons was (except on aircraft carriers) the Gunnery Officer. The job is now known in the US Navy as the Weapons Systems Officer, or colloquially called (by senior officers) "Weps."
e. The Engineering Officer, or person in charge of the power plant has always been the Chief Engineer, or "Cheng."
f. The Navigator has not changed much, but on a smaller ship was the third in command, and on a larger ship (with a "Commander" and "First Lieutenant"), was somewhere after them, I couldn't find out exactly where.
g. Ship's Supply Officer, or SupO (pronounced "suppo"), came from the jobs of Purser and Paymaster, and was responsible for all supplies for the ship, from food to ammo, and, until the advent of crippling, bureaucratic paperwork in triplicate, usually the personnel officer as well. The Ship's Service Officer (in charge of the ship's store and recreation of the crew) was a collateral duty, usually held by the Supply Officer.
h. The other ship's division of the time was the Medical Division, headed by the Ship's Surgeon, or Medical Officer, whom we have not met yet in this manga. (As an aside, when the bath was set up for the U-800 crew and Cookie invited Mamiya to join her in a bath, when Mamiya had a catastrophic nosebleed and Cookie yelled "Medic!", she should have yelled "Corpsman!," which is the naval term for a medic.)
5. With what I discovered online, I assume that:
a. The Captain is the Captain.
b. Commander Kuki is the Commander (billet, if not grade, XO in modern parlance).
c. Mamiya is the ship's First Lieutenant.
d. Obama is (obviously) the ship's Gunnery Officer.
e. Kobayakawa (equally obviously) is the Cheng.
f. Chiga is the Navigator.
g. Murakami is the Supply Officer.
4. On to ranks (or grades which is the proper term, as rank actually refers to seniority within a grade):
a. The Captain of the Unebi is always shown with three solid stripes on his sleeve (the lowest one having a loop), which, in the Imperial Japanese Navy, is indicative of the grade of Commander (O-5). (Commander, as well as Captain, can be a grade or a billet, as Kuki is the Commander of the Ship).
b. Kuki is shown in the first volume as having three solid stripes on her sleeve, with two exceptions (the first "chibi" picture at the beginning of chapter one and chapter 5, p. 19, where she is shown with two solid stripes and the upper stripe being half-width, denoting a Lieutenant Commander [grade 0-4]). In volume 2. Kuki is shown with either the Japanese sleeve stripes of a Lt. Commander or the Royal Navy sleeve stripes of a Lt. Commander (the middle stripe is 1/2 width).
c. Ann (and Joanna Rackham) are always portrayed with the Royal Navy insignia of the grade of Commander (O-5) on their uniform. Mary always has the insignia for Lieutenant Commander (O-4).
d. The only other members of Unebi's crew who wear grade insignia are Kiku and At-chan, who both wear shoulder insignia for ensigns (O-1). Mamiya, Chiga, and Murakami wear dress whites with no grade insignia shown, Obama wears khaki shorts and shirt with no grade insignia, and Chief Engineer Kobayakawa wears a tank top with no place to put insignia. We just have to assume they are officers (according to billet assignment, and the respect they are given by the crew).
e. The grade structure is kind of off, as the Captain (billet) of a destroyer can be a Commander (grade O-5), but the Captain of a Cruiser is almost invariably a Captain (grade O-6, four solid stripes). The XO, or Commander (billet) of a cruiser is usually one grade below the ship's Captain, or a Commander (grade O-5). If all these grades and billets are confusing, DON'T WORRY. I spent 22 years in the Marines, and it took me a couple of years aboard ship to figure it all out.
5. Other points of nomenclature:
a. Elsa Ebbers: in the Kriegsmarine, there was no grade of corporal (an army/land based grade). Her grade was probably Maat (comparable to Petty Officer 3rd Class (E-4).
b. Anyone on board a warship bridge who uses the term "larboard" (as Commander Kuki did in vol. 1) to refer to left would be keelhauled. In the 1840's, the Royal Navy changed left to "port," as larboard sounds too much like "starboard" (right) and could confuse the navigator or whoever is piloting the ship at the time. In battle, this could cause disaster.
