This isn't a Japanese thing, this is a typical person wondering around until they come to the conclusion that settling for what they can get is the only real option. 

Although you are right it looks to me that a major part of anime, manga and especially LNs  nowadays are some form of authors self-insert (maybe it's also just me being pessimistic). At some point those stories can become embarrassing and cringe and it seems really popular in japan (maybe because life there is so stressful?)...but the harem genre really doesn't suffer that much from it as it usually isn't a story driven genre anyways. I usually read those only to chill down and also shut down my brain. Like a light meal maybe? Or rather fast food? 

If we know that the heroin is nearly always a generic, pure virgin no matter what the circumstances are that kills the suspense (not that I want to see blackmail, cheating, infidelity or even NTR) and a series becomes predictable.

Japan has an unnatural habit of wanting girls who have Western features, such as blond hair and blue eyes, but also wants them to basically be Japanese. Or if they do have Western blood, it's always the mother who's a foreigner because apparently a Japanese woman being taken by an American man is impossible. Similarly, the whole basis of this new series is that readers want a girl who is perverted or slutty (see all the gal comics). At the same time, even though these girls are perverted, it's also important that they are virginal and as pure as winter snow. Because if any of the female characters mentioned offhandedly that had dated - not even fucked, but dated - someone before, they are used goods and are not worth the clothes they are wearing. Look at that series where the MC saves a women he considers "used goods" and she decides to act like a waifu in return - turns out she's still a virgin, and she just got that nickname because her name can mean "used goods". Japan is a nation of hypocracies.

Just because it's improbable doesn't make it impossible.  It might just be an easy way to make someone look "unique" but it's not like it gets in the way of the story or anything.

No, he's right. It basically means that another one of the kouhai's close ancestors on the other side of the family of the grandmother was also European.
Which kind of makes saying "her grandmother was British" kind of moot.
