Description: |
The story took place in a world plagued by Shocker, a mysterious terrorist organization. To assist its plan in world domination, Shocker recruited its agents through kidnapping, turning them into mutant cyborgs and, ultimately, brainwashing them. However, one of the victims was rescued just before the final step, and his name was Takeshi Hongo. With his sanity and moral conscience remaining intact, Hongo assumed the identity of the grasshopper-looking altered human (改造人間, kaizou ningen) superhero Kamen Rider and battled Shocker with his newly acquired powers.

This is often the case. More so than I think most people realize.
To put it in better context, of the 10 longest-running manga (google it), I've only read... one of them (well, a good chunk of it anyway). I recognize the names of less than half of them.
The longest-running manga in Japan, almost no one here has heard of, despite the fact that it also appears to be the sixth best-selling.
The simple fact of the matter is that some works resonate with audiences outside Japan, and others don't.
(Well... in Kamen Rider's case the problem might not be so much the content as that the protagonist's cover posters look ludicrous to our eyes.)
When I first saw this, I doubted it was the same Kamen Rider referenced in many other manga. It was definitely fun to read.
