The anime was a masterpiece in its own way, although the "divide" between the "guy who does the fighting" and the "brilliant strategist" was not THAT great as in Code geass (In code geass, Suzaku and Zero were bitter enemies most of the time, although Suzaku didn't know Zero's identity most of the time)
Advice:
If you are looking for a 2013-ish space mecha anime, try Ginga Kikotai majectic prince.
Well, it does not have the "something" that code geass and Valvrave have, but it still is a good view, has 24 episodes if I recall correctly
