Thats right. Even if the mangaka gets only a little bit of the price i have to pay. I would pay it so i can read it in my native language as i have stated before there is a lot of series they will never translate. After searching the net and looking offline in Bookstores there is no hint that this series will ever be translated in the german language.
So i have setteld to by the official realase from seven seas. But this means i have to pay approximately 5 - 6 $ more for one volume.
If it were translatet in germany i would have to pay 7,56 $ but it wasen´t so i have to pay 12,97 $ for one volume thats. In this case its affordebale becaus it has only two volumes. I wouldn´t dare to pay this for a manga that has more than 10 Volumes.
Currently i buy the manga Love trouble -Darkness- it has already 16 Volumes i think it will be a total of 18 - 20 Volumes. If it was like this Manga i had to Spend 80 - 100 $ more to buy it.
I don't mind if the money goes to the mangaka.
However, most of the time the money goes to a third party licensing outfit, and not only does the mangaka not get any money or only pennies, but the translators also don't get any money or mere pennies.
Welcome to capitalism, or rather a State backed oligarchy.
This is exacly the same for lot of Manga´s and LN in Germany. Next is a lot of good Manga arent availabile in my language (german). For example i really wantet to buy Angel Densetsu, Prunus Girl and so on. Another Series i found here at Batoto is 2 years behind in my country compard to Japan.
Its the manga Hiyokoi and the same goes for Love Trouble Darkness the only one wich is only a few month apart ist Monster Musume.
Manga ended with second volume, I doubt it will be scanlated ever again, Seven Seas probably release 2nd faster than any group.
If they're at a reasonable price and offer an array of payments methods, then there's no problem, the issue appears in another languages, when the distribution channels and economic model are almost in the stone age, as an example in the Spanish editorials, the price of ONE volume of any manga can cost almost a contract for your firstborn and nobody guarantees you that they'll keep the translation and distribution of subsequent volumes.
Many readers here and in other sites are native spanish speakers end up becoming billingual because of the previous reason and, truth be told, one of the many that ask scanlators to keep the work despite Viz breathing over their necks.
I like how the dinosaurs that work at the publishers are finally opening their eyes that they'll die if they don't improve their economical model regarding manga and LN, it really needs to be perfected this model to improve speeds to keep on par with japan.
...What taxes? Original price = $10, bookdep has it for $9 and free delivery.
$9 on bookdepository mmmmmm isn't a lot mmmmmm you can probably afford it mmmmmm shipping is free mmmmmm.
yay finally its here
The fact that I can't read this in my country will make my answer very biased, so yeah I really appreciate the scanlation since that's the only way I can read this manga without importing translated manga which cost bazilllion of money mmm...
My personal feeling on scanlating what's already being translated officially is "go ahead, but let people know about the official release". I consider morality a kind of moot point in this stuff, which is piracy (right?) so I think people should do what they want to do, and readers should choose how they read.
Supporting this particular series is a nice idea, though. First series was cancelled, after all. If scanlations help the series get more noticed so people know they can buy it then that's great, but that's really just me being optimistic.
cute cover
Personally I'm against scanalating chapters of series that are already available. And the closer to official release, the more against it I am.
Examples - Owari no Seraph is released soon in my country. I don't have an issue reading fan translations of 8 volumes or so ahead, because it will take two years before the manga catches up here. However, Monster Musume is about to get 6th volume released. I wouldn't read those chapters, only the very latest ones that a Japanese person would read in the magazine the series is published in.
Other example - Log Horizon. First volume of LN was released in May, and while I *could* read volumes 2+ without feeling too guilty, I know that the English release is way ahead. So I will just wait for the LN volumes in my country instead of reading fan translations.
So no, it's not a black and white stance on what is good and what automatically becomes bad. But chapters of volumes already released doesn't seem fair to the publisher. And since I don't like being empty worded, I already ordered the first volume from bookdepository for a hilariously low price, not as low as domestic releases but compared to Amazon... yeeah.
NAILS IN YOUR NAILS
gotta be painful!
A little off topic but a few questions:
1) Is it just the series overall?
2) Just content that's already translated? Like official is on volume 3 and scanlation is on volume 6
3) Do monthly chapters count towards this? So if officially they bring over the volumes but scanlation happen on un volumed mag chapters?
I know, but it still leaves a weird taste in my mouth when something already translated gets unofficial releases.
I'm super hyped for the Seven seas release(the first series was getting lonely). I did note in chapter... really.. I don't plan on actively releasing chapters... Volume 2 comes out in January...? expect chapter 3 around the end of the year if the tl does it. Yo Seven Seas if you're reading this just say the word and I'll drop it.
Of course this isn't official translation ripped(just look at the page where he get's nailed) the dialogue is completely different.
Reminder that the series is officially publisher and first volume was already released last month... not sure if I approve of scanalating a series that already has official release ahead of the fan translation.
Reminds me of people stealing translations from official Maoyuu releases.
Spoilers for the rest of volume 1:
