I agree. We have seed-exchanges were I live just because of this problem. Thanks to Monsanto, Pioneer and co. our diverse plant have been largely replaced by their own hybrid plants. Thanks to that crap my Grandfather can only bring his special Russian wheat to a independent mill, because the big ones aren't taking it. He didn't bought their seeds and their chemicals so they don't take his wheat.Then there is the fertilizer which main ingredient is phosphor - a resource that is steadily and quickly dwindling. If I would be a total cynic, I'll say we need another epidemic in the hope that it will kill a billion people.
Well inherently you are selling a cheap and hard to differentiate commodity where the the original producer now has almost no direct contact with the end consumer, good nutritious food is actually quite hard to produce technically but the returns are meagre, people eat non differentiated cheap commodities and assume they are almost as good as actual food, people are now more ignorant than ever of what food even is and where it actually comes from, intermediaries have dominated the market for a long time and waged wars based on their "cheap" food, despite the fact that this drive for "cheap" food has left the brunt of the pain squarely on the shoulders of producers and the environment.
We are burning through our scant mineral reserves of both of fossil fuels and applied elements such a phosphorous at an increasingly alarming rate, vast ecosystems of formerly stable forests and grasslands are now "managed" in frighteningly unsustainable ways.
humanity's 11,000 year legacy of vast crop species genetic diversity is increasingly dominated by just a few highly selected species that because of their greater planted area are significantly more vulnerable to catastrophic disease breakdowns.
Our "modern" diet is incredibly dependent on cheap hydrocarbons whether as fuel or nitrogenous fertilisers.
There will at some point be a catastrophic revelation of these consequences.
I love how she addresses the hardships farmers (especially the smaller ones) have to face and their sentiments towards the food industry in such a smug and light-hearted way. I always wondered why she draws herself as a cow - now I know. Cows a great, really
! All hail cows. They give milk, taste good and have the prettiest eyes from all animals (-> I want those eyelashes!)
And, sadly, the milk price is atrocious even were I live. Who wants to be a farmer when you get slowly strangled to death by such prices and the food lobby

Well it's on semi-hiatus/slowdown because of her Arslan Senki project.........if you want more manga about farm life/livestock this is probably your best bet, hence why I need a translator or group to work with.............

How neat! I'd read some place else that she'd worked on a farm for a number of years, but I didn't know she came from a family of farmers. I bet writing Silver Spoon really gave her a strong sense of nostalgia!

From the sound of the Dairy herd slowly meandering its way along the tracks to the milking Parlour, to forking out calf pens on a bitterly cold winters day; from the vagaries of their complex 4 chambered stomach with it's huge microbial fermentation vat rumen to the vastness of their genetic diversity and ecological adaptations allowing them to to survive extremes of climate and disease challenges.
if you're curious at all the vibrating slatted section on the Potato Harvester is called a Riddler it vibrates the much of the mud off.
