Alt Names: alt 异变者alt ホムンクルス

Genres: Drama DramaHorror HorrorPsychological PsychologicalSeinen SeinenSupernatural SupernaturalTragedy Tragedy
Type: Manga (Japanese)
Status: Complete
Description: Trepanation is the procedure of drilling a hole in the skull. It is said to increase the blood circulation and improve pressure inside the skull. It is also said to bring out a person's sixth sense, the ability to use ESP, see ghosts, move objects with one's mind. This is speculative fiction based on the concept of trepanation.

Note: For the vols done by Hawks and Mangascreener, only vols 1 to 6 are hq. Except for maybe 1 to 2 dl sites and Mangascreener's irc channel, you can't find these versions anywhere else. Enjoy! :) There also exists a super HQ version of vols 1 to 6 but I couldn't find that version anywhere.

And just like Ultra Heaven, this is yet another manga with no chapter breaks. So I'm gonna assume that each volume = 1 chapter and leave it at that.

wow that was a fucking ending lol not exactly the happy ending i'm used to but still pretty good, enjoyed the manga overall.

Maybe I just can't see it... but I think this book tried too hard.

Spoiler

Wasn't quite satisfied with the ending. Didn't feel like the story was going in that direction at all.

Quite a good read, and it ends on a reasonable note.

i got the same sensation, very funny weird. Most of all when he becomes so obsessed with holes

That hole made for me.

From secret of amigara vault.

To this day. I don't get the ending.

I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the ending but all in all a very interesting read. Definitely took me for a trip and made me uncomfortable at points but honestly, that's what I was looking for.

Yamamoto doesn't make happy endings. His manga always end in that bittersweet note - the characters you are supposed to root for might be alive and well but at the same time it is implied that ultimately they end up worse than in the beginning.

Wha...?

It was crystal clear in some parts, and I just couldn't get the other parts. For one, the high-school girl arc. It seems like I understood somethings, and then the others completely flew over my head. Likewise, the ending. I feel like I'm there, but I still quite don't get it. It's frustrating, dammit, especially when I got about everything else.

Other than that, this sure was a page-turner (why else would I finish this in two days when I have exams tomorrow D: ). The insight, the descriptions and the illustrations were great. However, I started reading this expecting one thing and ended up with something completely different... Not 100% satisfied. Still, good read.

edit: years and much thought about this later, I conclude that I hate pretty much every character except Ito. as someone said above, feels like a too "try-hard" philosophical venture. final score = nah

same here. read it in one go, but totally on my "brain, please forgot about it" list

Super weird, but kind of awesome :D

I'm not sure what percentage of the time I was tripping on acid while reading this. Either that, or the author was snorting some serious shit.

Man, what a ride that was. That was deep.

If you like this you seriously need to read Ultra Heaven straight away. http://vatoto.com/comic/_/comics/ultra-heaven-r1120/

Mind=fucked after reading this, nevertheless a great read that gets you hooked + the art is amazing and consistant throughout the series.

Dzięki wielkie za tłumaczenie! (thanks for polish version)

Just finished reading the series. Spoiler ahead obviously.

I don't really know what to think about it. I've never read a series that made me feel so disgusted about various things, which I think is pretty impressive to have any story make me feel nauseous. That being said I felt like a majority of the story kept trying too hard to be "philosophical" and often fell flat. Between that and repeating the same lines over and over and over it kept me from really coming to like this series.

For example the crossdressing arc and the nanako arc had both characters in the same scene repeating the same things back to each other where it felt like the dialogue wasn't moving. If this was done intentionally then it would mean it's because Nakoshi is tripping the fuck out, but I'm positive that it wasn't (yet).

The ending was interesting and I was wondering from the beginning if that was the route it would take (lo and behold it pretty much was). What I mean by that is the fact that Nakoshi was told trepanation can cause the patient to go a bit fucking insane. At the end of the volume we can see that Nanako probably died in the hotel when Nakoshi left, we saw a bulge (possibly air entering the cranium), blood upon her bandages, and being left alone for an unspecified amount of time. With the police showing up looking for him, I'm positive that she ended up dying and he left "looking for someone else to look at him" in other words to do the same to other people. We could imagine that either only Nanako died or that he killed multiple people from doing this.

I'm only disappointed that the author didn't go further with the insanity that he only brought up at the very end of the manga, it just didn't feel tied together and was sloppily done. In fact had the insanity become more prominent immediately after the 7mm hole, I would've been fine with that too. But it was introduced too late in the story.

I suppose there's the argument that he was insane from the initial hole in skull, but I'd insist otherwise.

Oh man, this really is a trip on so many levels!
I began to read this series because one person which I purely detest said it was a good read, and heck, it was really good read but at the time story was published up to volume 9 or so and it was about 3 or 4 years ago and today, It was real luck must say! Spotted this in highest rated column. Usually there's mainstream shonen/manhwa crap but the name "is it really that manga?" I asked myself.
Amazing journey for me. Did so many thing between picking it up and finishing and it all comes to something bigger and stronger in the end for me. And the final just blew me away.

Dafuq? There's a rape scene about a quarter of the way in.

And that's bad because....?

Dafuq? There's a rape scene about a quarter of the way in.

Not really. It is pretty horrifying.

Compared to the drug induced bad trips I've experienced this is not horrifying at all, but you should probably be happy about that.

True meaning of open your mind.

Feeling like doing a hole in my head.

i got the same sensation, very funny weird. Most of all when he becomes so obsessed with holes

This is intense, i got completely drawn to his world. And damn i thought i would drill my brain for a second lol.

And the artwork, wtf this is brilliant. It's really realistic so it doesnt feel that slowpaced, it's addictive you just want to know where this is all going. The most consistent manga i've read. The author is a genius

This was absolutely worth reading, very interesting and off the mainstream formula. It's a bit similar to oyazumi punpun, but it's more slow paced, feels almost like a psychological soap opera with 5 characters, and that's actually meant in a good way. Don't let the horror tag scare you though, it's very misleading.

Not really. It is pretty horrifying.

Definitely was an interesting read.

Will wait a couple years before daring re-reading it though. It's pretty intense.
