3. Once the princess (main character) reaches a certain age the contest will be over and who ever has the greatest guardian spirit or spirits will become king.

The princess is the reincarnation of a famed queen who had both the spirit of light and spirit of darkness as her guardian spirits.

The guy in black is the spirit of darkness.

Spirits choose someone who they wish to pledge there life with, you can think of spirits as normal things that have become monsters in a way. A dandilion, a spring. Inaniamte objects and animals and plants all can become spirits. Spirits by there nature are not always good. Yet if they choose someone to guard then its for life. Unfortuantly while guarding that person and lending them there powers they may never actually meet that person again, though they are always together.

IE the simple plot of the story is that the spirit of darkness likes the princess but also knows that he wants to protect her, but if he choose to become her guardian spirit they can't be together ever again, not in the way of lovers, so hes torn between his two choices. Unbeknownst to him is that the princess is desperately trying to become king so that she can choose who she will marry which happens to be the spirit of darkness. Thus to win the chance to become king she needs to have the spirit of darkness as her guardian, which doing so will let her marry the spirit of darkness but they can never be together again. Or she chooses to be together with him but they can never marry. So the story is set up with a simple shojo tragedy plot and will see how they attempt to get around it.

Thanks for this spoiler. I love this manga and I've been following this since the first chapter was scanlated. I've always thought it's easy enough to understand. Hmmm..........
