As for the manga: It's pretty great in art and story the depiction might not be accurate but its a great demonstration of whats going on in the world just take a llok at any demostration of anarchists,communists,gays and what not.

There is a problem with your reasoning. Societies that try to deny and ignore their past wont ever change.

I talk from experience. I live in Spain, we had a fascist goverment after a gruesome civil war and then we had an artificial transition towards democracy, there was a general amnisty and no one paid for their crimes during the dictatorship, no one repented or was held responsible.

The result was an inmature society that hasnt really changed, we may live on democracy now but most of the population still live on that fascist regime inside of their minds and values. And Japan, even in its chaotic highly consumist society hasnt changed that much either.

Presented with historical facts,replies with muh feelings and gommunism is the best fuck off fking k*ke loving i hope refugees r*pe your family.

Some of the issues mentioned here are viable, primarily the Senkaku islands dispute with China, the Kuril island dispute with Russia, and Liancourt Rocks dispute with S. Korea. The Senkaku islands are most noteable as they were annexed by Japan in 1895 during the first Sino-Japanese war, controlled by the US following WWII, and then returned to Japan in 1972. China currently argues that the islands should have been returned to China, and agressively challenge Japan's right to the former Chinese territory (especially now that it has been found to be near a sizeable oil deposit hoo-boy).

The Kuril islands, known as the "northern territories", is an opposite situation representing an ongoing dispute with Russia who annexed the islands during the tail end of WWII. According to the San Francisco Peace Treaty Japan was to relinquish control of the "Kuril Island chain", but Japan argues that the four southernmost islands nearest Hokkaido are not part of this chain and thus not covered by the treaty. As many of the particulars in this acquisition were largely unclarified in written treaty it's become a fairly contested issue.

Finally is the Liancourt Rocks, also known as "Dokdo" and "Takeshima" depending on the side, which likely has the most to do with the chapter. Both Japan and South Korea make historical claims which are muddied by the fact that ancient record-keeping has not proven to be the most reliable of sources, and it is difficult to determine which of the two countries administered the islands prior to the 20th century.

This is actually just a bit of backstory, just for those curious. I otherwise claim "no comment" for the rest of the content.

I'm going to take the less traveled road and say that i actually like how this manga is done and can see the perspective of what the mangaka's trying to express.

Sure, people will (and have) decried it as fascist, nationalist propaganda but seriously people, if this was a manga looking at things from a hard leftist perspective i dont think there would even be 1/10th of the outrage thats been written.

Yes, in the past the japanese did some epically horrible shit all around asia but thats in the past. All of the people responsible are long dead and buried. Compensation has been paid and apologies (mostly) made.

I have to agree with Takaogunz here. at some point in history, every country/racial group/ethnicity has done extremely horrible shit to someone else. something like continuously demanding compensation, like what happens today in some issues, just smells of abject absurdity.

tl;dr: leftist hatestorm and QQ influenced by giant bias and hate motivated idiocy.

I would like to inject another point of view into this mess of a disscussion, both for two aspect that i have seen:

- the nature of colonisation and its impact

- the problem of competing nationalism( and how much i hate it)

from the perspective of a country that has mostly been avoiding this disccussion and has been avoided in these discussion (Vietnam)

on the fist point of the nature of colonisation

- while vietnam wasn't colonised by Japan, the model of colonisation was the same, the extraction of natural resources and food away from colonisation in order to fuel industrialisation of the homeland, execpt we got dealt the french

- its definitely not the first time i have heard the arguement of "they gave us some roads and infastructure and helped us develop economiclly" , and again, im not gonna argue that they didnt do that, however, the other things that they did, the systematic how would one say "divide and conquer" of the native, preventing them from gathering into a polity that can govern itself, the extraction of resources that are suppose to feed the people and the benefits of those resources going to the colonisers and also those who worked for the colonisers, exploiting the lower classes and then also the civilising of the natives, which of course involve removing their culture and instilling ideas that would benefit the empire.

- its also not like we still dont exploit the poor now through globalisation, but for the most part now, the polities and its government is somewhat more responsive to the needs of the native because they are made up of natives rather then being decided by the governments of another country, its the same with vietnam and the same with korea, when the decisions that affects your people and their livelyhood is not under your control, implicitly and explicitly, this is a travesty.

on the problem of competing nationalism

- this is something i absolutely despise, especially in the case of the east asian nations and its neighbours because of how deep rooted it is and how ethniclly and racially charged this is.

- and its not is suppose to be that old, this all developed in the 19th century, modelled upon European nationalism as a way of regaining control of their indegious land, but it just slowly and sadly developed into its most vile form that somehow still exist today in every single nation in the area, despite the fact that if anyone tries to do something about this for real , it would only be a loss for everybody due to trade ties and i suspect that is the only reason that it has blown up yet.

- and also the fact that as someone else has mentioned, the governments are using this to distract the people away from their internal problems, which is typical of nationalist governments around the world and tbh has been a tactic ever since nationalist ideas gain ground.

- especially in the case of the East Asian countries, rapid economic growth and industrialisation has changed alot of things in the countries, with varying degrees of consequences for the population, especially the poor working class whose misery is being exploited not just through their labour that fuels the industrial and service economy but also their resentment of the political system that is not repsonsive to their needs. their resentment is then easily channelled into a fear of the others as a way of the governement to maintain their legitimacy and if anyone wants a clear case study on the impact of this type of nationalism, an extreme example tat involves both communism and imperial nationalism/faccism - look at North Korea, where influences of old school japanese imperialist nationalism and also the consolidation of state power of communism meet in order to create that mess.

- not that im saying that some of their resentment and problems arent based on facts, i mean no one is going to forget what happened in WW2 and no one is hopefully trying to bury their involvment and behaviours during that time, oh wait everyone is doing that, though i personally i think japan has been more guilty of this then the rest.

- I hate this to my core because mostly i have lived a multicultural life with chinese, japanese and korean people so i feel that these behaviours by the governments of these countries, who all have massive problems with the treatment ethnic minorities due to their nationalistic tendencies, are just despicable.

- also there is the very fakeness of the ideas behind these nationalistic tendencies and how racially charged it is, i have made a long rant on this before and im just gonna copy paste it here

here is the thing though, lets take animals for example. the reason why we enforce the protected mating of certain species of animals, is because within those groups, they can only breed with each other to create viable offspring that can make sure that their species survive.

human races are not like that, a mixed race offspring is as fertile and as viable to carry on the human species as any "single race". there is no genetic reason to enforce a mating regime for humans to ensure continuation, because human races &ethenicity arent species and the only thing u can hope to continue is a very vauge and deluded sense of identity, formed by "us" and "them" that is completely artificial.

lets take the country I know best and a good example of this : Vietnam. a country with a now dominant ethnic group called the Kinh. This ethnic group can be called racially pure group of Vietnam but they are anything but pure cause their formation came as a result of several tribes in the region and even from outside the region blending together and forming a single identity. the japanese or Yamato people are the same, since there were many different tribes, cultures and ethnicity that lived on the peninsula and then come together to form the kingdom.

also if u try to apply to logic of the project to an area like mainland Europe, good luck trying to make it consistent in anyway shape or form, cause the area is so mixed ethinically that preserving any "race" is just drawing an arbitrary line on people and exposes the nature of this flawed view of "race".

Race and ethnicity is a cultural form, not a genetic one, that has just become based upon appearences in the eyes of humans. therefore to make decisions and seperate people and determine their lives base upon it is a political decision, not a decision of science. thats why its racist, at least to me, because you are making these decisions, base upon a prejudiced concept, based upon physical appearances and saying that it has greater importance then it actually does, and ignores the contributions of others to your society.

again, if the project has no plans of protecting the purity of race, then it is sort of meaningless and also even very inefficient since u could just u know, release them into the "wild", which will get u better result since they are given a wider selection of people anyway. since the country is populated, this should be fine. the fact that they try to control it and select "specific kinds of people" that should be allowed into the project, this shows how they feel about people the "them" that they dont want and still makes it again, xenophobic at best and really racist at worse because the fact they find one kind of people "acceptable" and another not is the proof of that. if they were just fine with him making babies, then what is the point of that wall that still seperates them from the outside world.

In the begining the manga acknowleges the reason for this project, because the old people are obsessed with their past, their vision of japan, their japan, which they feel is no longer there, populated with "their" japanese and with "their" japanese sterotypes. this is old school Asian-Nationalism, the kind that is still in every East Asian country, and some south east asian country that i feel horrible everytime i hear it, this sort of very seemingly tame racism that breeds fighting and hatred and is just completely meaningless.

to your question of : if u can save the Japanese race? My answer would be: that is a meaningless question. because again its an artifical concept of culture. If there are people who do Japanese things, talk like a japanese, act like a japanese, have a japanese name and identify as a japanese, even have japanese citizenship, but just look different, would you say to them that they are not japanese? also in making their physical apearance the defining characteristic, it implies that all other aspect of a people is somehow not that important, like saying that the Zen buddism they created, the bushido code, the arts, the literature and the god-like food, their politics and their religion and espcially ANIME AND MANGAS, are somehow not as important to being japanese as their face. its not about politcal correctness, its about what is it u r holding dear, ur face or ur way of life.

your physical appearance could be a part of it, dont get me wrong, but its no where being the most vital and no where near the level where it should somehow be protected. we protect cultures and languages around the world for a reason and not ethnicity, because that actually matters.

- vietnam is also very guilty of this if the recent riots and destruction of chinese properties and targeting of minorities and mixed race people is an indication of this, and there are also strong emerging sentiment against mixed race people, which is just see as the ultimate hipocrisy of the of the whole idea asian nationalism, or nationalism in general.

- we have a rich history together and now also share vital trade relations that would severly weaken us all if we are to really fight.

- thats why seeing stuff like this litterally makes me lose hope for humanity, esspecially at a time like this where all of these problems with race relations is popping up again around the world (Trump really scares me) because of course like before, we have neglected this for so long that we have forgotten the problem and all is left is fearn which is so elusive that its could be unremoveable.

on a small side note, vietnam, which was brutally occupied by Japan during WW2 and aslo during that time, exploited its resources for whatever it was worth, leading to the death of 2m people. it has always been funny to me how in the conversations about these things, vietnam has never been involved, never speak out or even mentioned, either in all of the apologies that japan has made or in international conversations and it wasnt surprising to me that we have been paid off, mostly during the cold war thorugh war repririations, which was tiny and also continued trade support that is continuing until today, so that VN government doesnt want to dig up a fight as that would lose a source of their funding and due to the greater bargaining power of the japanese government in these aids.

the only reason i think korea and china is able to make this fight is due to the fact that they think they have enough economic power to be able to make a fight, not accounting for the fact that doing so would really really hurt them.

nobody is innocent in this discussion though and some have commited more acts and the other, and i think there should be repritriation, even today for a simple fact, the people today have benefited from the actions of their ancestors in exploiting and harming others, both in the development of their country and the poilitical unity that they created. all of us here behave as a society, we have to be open to bearing that legacy and not try to say that we owe each other nothing. now, the question of what kind of repririation and how much is another question, and one only solvable if we openly talk about what we want but as mentioned before, this is never about what we can get from each other, but about how we can use the other to streghthen ourselves.

politics and diplomacy shouldnt be a game, but we mess around with it like its one.

I like how the story actively plays with perceptions and bias but does so sympathetically to the Japan Right.
I'm going to avoid the political discussions though (Seriously, I lived in Japan for 3 years and its politics make my head hurt) and simply focus on the object lessons one can take from this.
The setup is interesting, and the execution of the story is instructive on biases.

You made remember that infamous beheading competition between two japanese officials in China, I don't know if stuff like that is ever going to be forgotten or forgiven, Assyrian brutality is still famous to this day and even if the hatred has faded away since the victims and the victimaries have been gone for millenia, that memory persists, probably that is how things like the Holocaust and the japanese war crimes are going to be remembered, a dark chapter of the human history that is so distant in time that people could believe that things like that could not happen in the present, but sadly that brutal way in which we are able to treat each other is a trait that will remain until we disappear or somehow we manage to create some kind utopia.

Well, you have a point that WW2 especially will remain in our memories because it's pretty much the biggest man-made event in history. Not so sure about the Assyrians. Most people don't even know they ever existed and modern Assyrians don't receive discrimination for events that happened thousands of years ago (though they do, it's more to do with being Christian and not assimilating).

The point is, most people have put that behind them despite realising what a terrible, sad, bloody war it was. On all sides. Hell, I grew up hearing stories about my grandpa being tortured by Japanese in their camps. It doesn't mean I hold any hatred or expect any apologies or anything from Japan and its government - the people who did the torturing are long since dead. Why should the people in Japan today, be held responsible for actions a previous generation committed? It's ridiculous.

Edit: This kind of turned in to a rant, and what you said didn't warrant it. Sorry. Though I do think you're wrong about how WW2 will be remembered. The best example is Genghis Khan. Dude and his army killed millions, they spread the black plague (though this may be apocryphal) and caused human misery on a massive scale. Many people, historians included, say that old Genghis did a good thing, because his massive empire opened up trade networks, brought peace and stability to a large region of the world etc etc.

While long-term, it might have indeed been beneficial, what they forget is the massive atrocities that had to occur for that to happen. WW2 may one day be seen this way too: "Sure, it was bad, but it led to a greater desire for peace, more international co-operation, the advancement of medical, military technology etc." In fact, I can guarantee you people are saying this today.
